That really sucks :(

This is probably a good time to remind people of; SNAP. I is easy to use, and having it stored offsite is always a bonus.

your macbook should also turn up in findmyiphone if you've used it in the app store, iirc. Mine does although not always successfully. obviously relies on being connected somewhere and in range of other wifi points to get its location. pretty sure you can turn on lost mode like you can with other ios devices so it starts logging its movement.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

Just keep looking on trade me.  I brought a bike on trademe in Feb from a chap down in Palmy, i'm in Auckland. Paid him the money and got a friend to pick it up to transport up to me.  He took it to work and while waiting for it to be transported (30mins away), one of his mates came around the corner and went nuts to find his stolen bike there, accusing everyone and anyone in the area of stealing it.  He finally got the story and took it home, we both rang the police, i'm out of $550, the guy has been taken to court and found guilty and we are just awaiting his sentence.  Whats the chances of that happening?
The fact that he was stupid enough to put it on trade me as well.

I've bought one of the cheap foscam (8910w) webcam. Only $140

I was surprised to find it was built in motion detection and can be set up to email the photos generated (?ftp too)

Resolution not the greatest - you get what you pay for after all, but when I go away I put it on a bookshelf overlooking the stereo/ps3 stack or computer setup.. (sends photos to my Gmail account then phone)

A.

Sorry to hear about your loss Chris, I hope that Police were helpful and polite when you called. Have they been around yet to do fingerprinting?

What a joke. It's crimes like these that need to be snuffed out before these crims go up to the next level of offending.

This may sound silly, but is there a program you can get that unless you do something or enter something that automactically locks up the keyboard so they can't use the laptop and this program can't be deleted unless they destroy the harddrive totally.

Had a visit from the local community constable this afternoon.
Nice lady.
Suggested a couple of website: SelectaDNA abd SNAP which I think someone mentioned earlier in this thread.
Certainly be looking into these now.

Sorry to hear about your burglary... we got done a while ago and while our insurance company was fantastic it still doesn't make up for the invasion or the annoyance of now having to take extra precautionary measures every time I go out now. The Police were also "too busy" to attend and the fingerprint crowd although helpful didn't come until the next day.

It is still a good wake up call and time to reassess how you do things... I now have any laptops encrypted and the hdd locked, data backups on a hidden NAS, deadlocks with keys removed when away, portable devices out of plain view and a motion sensitive camera system which send email alerts so I can then view whats going on remotely via my phone.

Gone are the days of leaving keys in the car and the back door open!
