What car made in 2001 cost $3010 ? Must've been a high mileage one because i just sold my 1993 rolla for $2k , could've gotten more if i was willing to wait. I'd have thought a 2001 car is somewhere around 6K

A base model falcon woth 170000 ish on it.

michaelmurfy: If I found out who wrote that comment they'll have another thing coming to them, I'm currently "poor" due to the fact I'm currently in a transition between jobs, I walk most places because I like exercise and also drive a Mitsubishi FTO GR, it's a bit hungry on fuel but I only use it when I have to use it.

Being Poor can come as a few things:
1) My situation, loss of job, transition into a new job taking longer than expected.
2) Not finding work out there.
3) Illness preventing you from working, government only giving you enough to get by.

But the most common thing for a rich person to do is to spend all their money on cars, jewellery, their house etc so they look rich to others, but you might find they can't afford the rates or the maintenance on their car(s) - they're literally wearing their money. When I worked in retail the most common scenario was you'll get staff that all go to the people who look like they have money but avoid the person in the corner looking at the expensive products because they thought he had no money,

1) The people who look wealthy are the ones that really have no money, most of the time they're wearing it, the sales reps almost never got any sales from these people.
2) The poor guy in the corner not getting served has a multi-million dollar business and needs these expensive products for his staff members, ensuring a huge sale, he does not wear his money, he stores it in the bank instead, I used to target these people in retail and was always the top salesperson.

More or less it's a stereotypical thing, I'm one of these guys who likes being left alone whilst going gadget shopping so dress in a tshirt and jandles, I never get served but I actually have money and know what I want, I taught this trick to my father and works every time with him, doesn't get nagged by salespeople but when he asks he get's the best service out (and teaches the sales person a trick or two about approaching all customers in the future)

Anyway, to conclude my rant, I hate most humans on this planet. I hope the guy who wrote that reply has karma come and knock on his door.

Are you my brother in another lifetime ?
Cause man you fkn read my mind!

Glad that there are still people like you out there.

I'm mike too btw.

Reminds me of that pretty woman movie where Julia Roberts were getting ignored at a boutique shop in hollywood.

There is one mighty flaw in this plan, acc covers effectively not only injuries incurred to yourself but to others, what about a "theoretical" situation when business man driving late model/safe car lets say a saab for example mows down a pedestrian, should this driver pay less premium because he has a safe car despite being a menace on the roads?

That's already a feature of ACC, you pay depending on your risk as a "victim".

Really? Where is the pedestrian, or even more susceptible cyclist, specific ACC levies??

The theory would be that newer cars have to meet newer, more strict pedestrian safety regulations, thus in theory the same incident occurring (speed, impact type etc) has a reduced chance of causing serious injury. Doesn't necessarily translate well to real-world results, though.

Although the post is clearly a troll there are attitudes like this in New Zealand on many subjects...

eg the large majority of those on DPB are under 20 female and single. The majority of those on Job seeker benefits are just bludgers that don't want to work

There is one I experience often and that is to do with attitudes to disabled, that is able bodied parking in mobility parks in their minds the disabled have an unfair advantage. And this happened to me, I parked in a mobility
park and had my permit clearly displayed, when I returned to my vehicle it was clamped, When I spoke to the clamper he said he did not believe that the vehicle belonged to a genuine disabled person as the disabled do not
drive late model SUV's.

For this , they should take into consideration the pedestrian crash rating (from ncap or something) of the car as well.

coolcat21: Forgive me if this seems abit silly to post about.

But there was an article on NZ Herald discussing the new ACC proposal on charging drivers of older unsafe cars higher than cars that are save.  http://www.nzherald.co.nz/motoring/news/article.cfm?c_id=9&objectid=11128210

I agree with the author if that means anything. But I was reading the comments and 1 comment made me mad. The person must be one of those daddy's girl or boy  who grew up rich on their parent's dime and are now still being helped alot (probably working full time on his/her parents company)

Anyways, the screenshot of the comment is below ....i'm just angry.

On a side note, I do actually drive a 10 year old corolla. It's got 2 airbags, seatbelt pretensioner, abs, brake assist etc.  I bought the car quite cheap. I"m not sure if under the new proposal it's considered "safe" or not. Hopefully yes.

ACC's idea is eminently sensible.

The comment sounds like it was written by an 18 year old British Public School boy. I know - I was one.

I was at Christmas drinks with our neighbours a year or two ago and their son, then about 19, was complaining bitterly because, despite his parents paying for him to spend 6 months in Japan, he was not being allowed to travel Business Class for the first time in his life.

I was at College with a number of wealthy young men, some of whom could be very obnoxious if they put their mind to it. I was in a pub once and overheard one of them remark loudly to a woman who had taken a slightly drunken shine to him which he was not reciprocating "If you don't p*ss off and leave me alone, I'll buy the bl**dy pub and have you evicted!". Amazingly at the age of about 21 he actually was wealthy enough to do so, as well!

There really are a lot of people like that in the world, it's just that people here are not used to interacting with them.

I want to visit Ireland someday.

And yep, i hate those kind of people you mention with a passion.
Boy if my parents paid for me to spend 6 months in japan, i'd offer to do their laundry, clean their cars, cook for them for a year.  The trip to Japan itself is potentially once in a lifetime thing (well for now) ..Japan is an amazing country. And now he wanted business class ? ...F--- that boy lol.

The more incredible thing for me was that, until he was 19, he had never flown any way OTHER than Business! And believe me, he'd flown a lot. (Oh - and his first car after passing his test was a brand new VW Golf GTi with a personal plate...!).

Oh wow ok, now i'm getting a bigger portion of the story. Good. I thought his parents were blue collar people who couldn't afford business class but had saved up $$$ just enough to send their son to Japan.

So they're rich folks hmm. Then the kid is a really really spoiled brat and someone/something must do some intervention before it gets bad.  My first car after passing my restricted test was a 1993 Corolla passed down frm my dad (and i had to buy it off him for $1500 with allowance money). Then I got a full time job and about a year later (this year) , I bought a 10 year old corolla...much saver, much more fuel efficient, aircon works .....but it ain't no Golf GTI lol.  I kinda feel sorry for those kind of people. I surely would not want to be spoilt at that age if my parents were loaded.  Yea sure i'd be happy to think that I won't have to worry so much about student loans etc. But that's where it stops and i'd use that to relieve alot of pressure in my job search.  So instead of job searching to pay bills, I can job search to built up a solid career working my butt off.

Like someone once said to me (and i'm sure alot of peeps have heard this too) : "It's alot easier to start out being arrogant and be humble later, than to start out humble and slowly work your way up the respect ladder. "

I"m guessing his parents are now starting to teach him the value of $1 by not paying for business class ?

I am amused by the quality of the spelling and grammar in the comment.

Hmm. Someone said that post wasn't sarcastic, that you can't do sarcasm over the internet, etc. The quotation marks around the word "Betters" would beg to differ.

I think the comment was a joke comment, but it does make a valid point - poorer people could end up paying more until the older vehicles are no-longer on the road.

However, I have still trying to work out why diesel passenger cars are more dangerous than petrol ones (they pay more ACC on the registration than for petrol).

They own 4 houses, an Aston Martin, a BMW and their house next door has a pool and a tennis court. No, too late. Besides, the kid will inherit so much money it won't matter to him.
