Here's my build log/guide for anyone interested: http://www.devhour.net/build-a-quadcopter-part-1-the-parts/

Have you tried fitting a camera or gps unit?

Weather has been average the past few weekends so I haven't been able to get it out. I'll definitely get a video of it at some stage. FPV (First Person View) is next on the agenda which adds another couple of hundred on top. Trying to convince my other half that this is a good use of money :)

GPS is another thing I want to do as well. This is very handy though because if you lose contact with the radio the quadcopter can come back to it's inital GPS point. Though the current flight controller I have (KK2.0) is very good for beginners, it doesn't have any of the bells and whistles of other flight controllers. Again it all comes down to money.

nzkiwiman: I got one of those wee micro helicopters as an Xmas gift in 2012 and love the thing, just wish that it could handle more than the slightest breeze when being used outside and I could get it to hover in place.

Want a slightly more powerful version now, but never known where to look

Was at jaycar today, their rc devices are quite cheap!

i overpaid for my 3.5 channel rc helicopter.

And if you're going to buy anything half decent, then make sure spare parts are readily available, as you will almost certainly need them. Probably frequently.

There is some software that some of the higher-end controllers will interface with so that you can control a simulator with the "proper" controls. Don't recall the name but don't think it's hard to find, does need a higher-end controller though.

Yeah, I have Phoenix model flight sim but there is also Real Flight. Both a pretty good but I think Phoenix is the better of the two for the range of models you can 'fly' and the general physics. They aren't really the same as flying but you can learn a lot about orientation and general hovering skills on them. If you want to be more realistic then turn up the wind gusts a little. Even inside you have thermals to contend with, heh.
