ScuL: The biggest bummer is for tourists visiting the US!!

Parks like the Grand Canyon are now officially closed.
I don't have a trip booked over there until March 2014 but I do hope things will be sorted by then!

LOL If it's still broken in 2014, you will have MUCH MUCH *MUCH* bigger problems to worry about.

Well from what I have read from previous occurrences, National Park shutdowns in the past have lasted for several months

Finch: So does this mean America is broke? Or what?

Yeah - America is broke - but that's another issue for another time (a time not far away).

I thought this happened every year, where congress decides to break near the end and not sign anything until they get back.

This isn't like the holiday season shutdown. They don't have enough funding allocated to federal services so they have to shut them down. Here's a pretty good Q&A rundown for you to read if you're so inclined.

No idea what this all means. Should we be worried?

The country isn't (other than the multi-trillion dollar debt), but certain governmental budgets have been denied by the republicans who have made promises to their rich masters, after they basically held congress to ransom by saying that they'd only allow the funding if major changes were made to health care laws (which had only been ratified very shortly beforehand). Obama & Co. told them to GTFO so they threw their toys out of the cot.

The NZ Herald actually has a fairly good article on it (US politics so their usual bias's probably don't apply): http://www.nzherald.co.nz/international-politics/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503226&objectid=11132582

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

The US is ranked the highest when it comes to external debt. $US 16,737,246,099,998

Interesting though that when looking at the per capita and per GDP figures, New Zealand is actually worse off.

New Zealand debt per capita 52,300
United States debt per capita 52,170 (They actually better off)

New Zealand debt % GDP: 126
United States debt % GDP: 106 (Again they better off)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_external_debt

If they broke. What are we?

I'm flying to the States next week, on a US Government-sponsored work exchange.  I've been assured that the funding for that is already confirmed so the exchange will go ahead, but the federal agencies we were going to be meeting with during the exchange might still be shut down.  The organisers seemed reasonably confident that it would be resolved before we arrived in the States, but you never can tell.  So currently, my Statue of Liberty ticket for mid-November is worthless, and my plans for sightseeing might need changing...  Oh well, at least the politics will be fascinating!

I'm heading over there in a few weeks, but thankfully not for any Government-related reasons... although hopefully it'll all be sorted out by then!

How exactly do you close the Grand Canyon?!

I have not been there since 1991 but I don't recall gates or fences around it.
