Firstly I didn't know a government can shut down ...

Reminds me of hell's kitchen: "shut it down!"

So I am guessing shutting it down costs more than signing the darn paper?

The Republicans are holding America to ransom and finally we are starting to see signs for the first time, that Americans are placing the blame where it should be, those still holding a grudge based on an election result!

My political leanings would traditionally be aligned with the more business focused Republicans, but the behaviour of these people in the last 8-10 years makes it very hard to believe they could have a countries best interests at heart.

It's despicable.

I guess on the upside, any time we think we have it bad, we can always look to the good old US and A.

Yes - but it's not all Republicans.  It's a dumb and suicidal move by the tea party faction - and this will hopefully the end of them.
Last time the republicans pulled a stunt like this, they got obliterated.  Dirty political stunts don't work.

US equity market futures are holding positive ground.  That must be a hell of a disappointment to some people.

Republican "business focused" ideology is a myth - the party is trapped between classic liberalism (aka libertarianism / economic rationalism) which conflicts absolutely with having to win support from (and pander to the desires of - even if limited to 15 second sound-bites on Fox) protectionist / xenophobic / social conservative / "shootin' for Jesus" morons - who they have to rely on for "heartland" support.

Nope. The politicians voted that they were an essential service (just like air traffic controllers and the military) so they'll keep getting paid. It would be very cynical to suggest they're only interested in looking after themselves, so don't do it. OK?

Congress passed Obamacare a couple years ago > Congress didn't fund it > This time congress has still not included any funding in the budget for Obamacare > White House won't accept budget without Obamacare funding and therefore causing the shutdown

Correct me if I'm wrong but that's my understanding of it

But their aides and staff do not get paid. They were quite "accurate" with that debate

Ms Lewinsky testified that Wednesday, November 15, 1995-the second day of the government shutdown-marked the beginning of her sexual relationship with the President...

I won't pretend to really understand US politics, but I thought the senate made changes that congress refuses to agree to.

Semi related, did I hear something recently about the UK defunding their public healthcare? Or am I going insane?

So does this mean America is broke? Or what?

No idea what this all means. Should we be worried?

Not significantly so, it's mostly posturing. It will get resolved, everyone will get paid.

The biggest bummer is for tourists visiting the US!!

Parks like the Grand Canyon are now officially closed.
I don't have a trip booked over there until March 2014 but I do hope things will be sorted by then!
