+1 for IKEA, to keep traffic issues to a minimum build it on the outskirts, its not like a supermarket which needs proximity to its target market, I would happily travel across town for IKEA

I would happily travel to hamilton to go to an ikea, so if auckland is so short sighted then let the tron have it. Quicker to get there than parts that are called "auckland" half the time.

That would help, not.

According to wikiP John Banks was mayor of Auckland in 2008 when the Environment Court ruled Ikea not welcome and the EC was established by the National Government in 1996 and JB was a National Party MP at the time.

But at least we would have the V8's

That is not my experience.
They produce a lot of knocked down (flat pack carton) furniture thats functional and looks good. But don't move house with it as its not really designed for breakdown and reassembly. (And Kiwis tend to move often)

Just sitting in Changi Aiport in Singapore, moving to Ireland and planning the Ikea shopping experience in Belfast. I have found most Ikea furniture breaks down and reassembles ok as long as it is assembled with that in mind the first time.

I thought that IKEA required a minimum of two million within 50 miles or so of the store. Nowhere in NZ has that AFAIK.

Returning John Banks - after all Kim Dot Com and Sky want a return on their investment. Although if he can't remember accepting the funds, he wont remember he needs to return the favour.

No to the meatballs - not a fan of horsemeat myself.

I wouldn't call their furniture quality though. UK friends find the need to replace them after a couple of years.

If the business case is so compelling why haven't they opened a shop in another location. Rather than some complicated conspiracy theory, maybe their isnt enough money in it for them..

There's not 2 million near Adelaide, but we have an IKEA.

By what measure? Certainly some of their stuff is very low price, but mostly because it is made in low wage countries and they make it en-mass. But I wouldn't say it is the best quality. What it does do is makes good design affordable. There is an opporunity for a NZ business to do the same thing, design done in NZ, and made offshore, but the problem is getting the cost down. I wouldn't be keen paying money to get a big international company to come to NZ, so their profits then go back offshore.

Ireland has two Ikea's (one in Belfast, and one in Dublin), and their population isn't much higher than here.

In the US (and soome other countries) it's 2 million. In Aus their criteria are, unless it has changed, 1 million within 100km, and the Aus company hold the location rights for the brand in NZ, so would assume the same would apply here.

Ikea would make a great, positive impact on pricing of mid-range furniture and homewares etc, imo. The quality is better than you tend to get at the department stores etc here, and is also typically cheaper. There's even been a bunch of stuff we've found it cheaper to buy from Ikea in Aus and ship here, than to buy locally.
