Len says that he wants to make Auckland the world's most livable city.

It may not be the most important thing but a lot of Jafas will not accept that we are if our planning authorities refuse to let us have one on the rather odd grounds that they know that we really do want one badly.

Come on Len, give us an Ikea.

You know that we want one and you know that they want to come here.

The only reason that they are not here is that the fools at the Environment Court actually banned them because they would be too popular.

So come on Len, this is a political issue not a business issue and you can fix it for us.

Go find a suitable location. Get your planning goblins to work out what infrastructure would be needed to solve access and traffic issues. (When I lived in Germany, my city council went do far as to build a new Autobahn off-ramp specifically for the new Ikea. In Dublin, they run busses from the town centre with the destination marked as Ikea.)

Then go schmooze the bosses at Ikea's Aussie division. Say sorry what what happened in 2008 and tell them all about the new site that you have found for them.

Get them here for us all Len. Make a difference.

You're saying AKL council decided not to allow IKEA to establish in their yard because it would cause some traffic madness?

Who'd have thought that the same council who said "No" to TelstraClear's plans to bring cable network to the city would say "No" to other stuff.

Well, someone voted these folks in. Get them out and try again.

Sounds like you're stretching the truth a bit here.... AFAIK they just ruled against an ikea store (or the idea of one) in one shopping centre- they didnt ban ikea from auckland, or new zealand.  Any proposed location would need planning permission and traffic flows and parking are large considerations in whether they will succeed.

I'm sure there are other locations that could be considered for an ikea store, ones where peak traffic flows will be much less of a problem.

You mean you've never heard of IKEA?

EDIT: Granted the OP is rather jumbled and not capitalising the name makes it sound like a native bird. ;-)

Agreed but it has in effect turned into a ban.

The court preempted perceived interest on the part of Ikea by ruling against them and ever since, they have stayed away.

Nope. I do not think that we ever got to vote for the people who sat on the Environment Court.

coffeebaron: Bring back John Banks!

That would help, not.

According to wikiP John Banks was mayor of Auckland in 2008 when the Environment Court ruled Ikea not welcome and the EC was established by the National Government in 1996 and JB was a National Party MP at the time.

Didn't all the local retailers moan last time Ikea tried to get to Auckland because they knew they would never compete? Get them in. Besides, the Swedish meatballs Ikea sells are excellent and so are the hotdogs.

Let's have Walmart etc as well whilst we are at it - that should cut many bills!
