Satch: I wonder if retailers would accept photos of receipts. There must be an iPhone app out there for that. Although they commonly say "with original receipt only" which won't include photos or scans.

timmmay - how do retailers react to your scanned receipts?

Warehouse, and another shop recently recommended me to scan my receipts due to heat fade.

Mostly they say "that's a great idea". I've never had anyone who had a problem with it.

God I wish shops would just email them if they have you in their database, i.e. Noel leemings always asks for a phone number and name on +$100 items.  Would be a lot easier if it would just email the address on the account.

Even if the retailer didn't like a scanned/printed copy of the original receipt, you could just ask them to provide you with a duplicate tax invoice of the original (they have to store them for 7 years as per GST requirements). They hand you the duplicate, you hand it back to them as proof of purchase.

I can't see many retailers being difficult though, usually the person behind the counter isn't going to be losing any money themselves so they'll just be following whatever procedure the store has.

Recently bought a bunch of stuff from Macpac for Christmas presents and they signed me up to their "club" - glorified mailing list - which has a really positive benefit (apart from the discounts).

You don't need a receipt for any returns/warranty claims - they log all of your purchases against your phone number and can check the date/price etc any time.
