sbiddle: What would you do if you were the CEO?

Step 1: Insist that my unnecessarily over-bloated salary was dropped to under $100,000 (instead of $1million +) and put that extra money back into running the business OR lowering prices.
Step 2: Get rid of all "bonuses" for simply doing your job properly.
Step 3: ...

rayonline: On this topic - do any of you guys don't get mail re: bank statements, credit cards, utility bills. Ie - all emailed or log online?

By post we still get (ignoring junk mail):
- monthly bills for credit cards, electricity, water, rates, etc.
- my quarterly business account statements
- annual AA memberships
- some of my business payments

One non-profit organisation I work for gets hundreds of letters daily (during the peak of their promotions) in the post with cheque and credit card donations. They then daily send out hundreds of tax receipts by post as well. Being a business with a PO Box, they will still get mail on a daily basis, otherwise it would be horrendous trying to process days' worth (especially after a weekend) with NZ Post only delivering every other day.

rayonline: Could be wrong but do some people enjoy writing letters? They want to get rid of cheques too but account no. would do. ..

Many people do, especially the older generation (many of whom do not have computers).

The organsation I mentioned above probably gets around two-thirds of their postal donations by cheque.

So you are saying that you will have no competent staff in the Management team, yeah that will work... to hasten the death

My folks don't know about computers. I have to do their Internet Banking for them overseen by them of course.  Tax time is coming, but bank statement not arrived in post yet so Internet bank may give the accountant a bit more time if we can download them a bit quicker ...

NZ Post is talking about 1/2 weekly mail deliveries.  This might become weekly.

Instead of cheques they might ask people to fill out a form for debit authority - the account no. would be the one on their cheque book.  There might be a way where, they use a kiosk place the documents on the glass to be scanned and put in this unique ID no. for the destination and the way it goes sent securely.  Something like a hybrid approach should mail deliveries becomes infrequent and they prefer not to pay for registered mail.  The same kiok might after you swipe your card, it would tell you bills that is outstanding the due date and amounts, click on each and it brings up the invoice.

... With the prices increases, lowering the number of delivery days, and trying to force silly "self-service" in branches, they're simply hastening the end of their own business ...

1. higher prices
2. fewer deliveries (3 per week?)
3. slower deliveries  <<<  for some reason this hasn't been mentioned

I recently received a correctly addressed letter postmarked 6 days earlier, posted in my own city - despite triple postage and a FASTPOST sticker on the front.

Earning $1.3 million I'd probably be laughing all the way to the bank.  According to the annual report the top 10 employees earned over $7M.  A strategy of increasing postage while cutting jobs is hardly a strategy worthy of such a salary is it?

Post have stated their strategy - it's on the web site - supposedly this includes "digital platforms".

It costs as much to deliver 1 letter to an address as 10.  So for as long as there is paper mail, and the volume is reducing, the cost of delivering each letter will go up, and why shouldn't that be charged to the consumer?

There is still a future in delivering goods, I doubt that will go away soon, and NZ post are very competitive in this market.

I really don't understand why people complain so much about NZ post.  Compared with many other post offices around the world they do a pretty good job.

Well every time a overseas owned company asks you for your email address to send communications to, instead of mailing them, it weakens NZ posts business, for the benefit  of increased profits for that company. I don't see many companies passing on the price saving to their customers.
The whole thing about saving trees to me is trying the greenwash it, as companies can use recycled paper instead to send communications on.

Like with newspaper and good NZ Journalism, if you want these services to remain, you have to support them. If you don't use it, you lose it, as someone has to pay.

By offering salaries like you stated here  "Insist that my unnecessarily over-bloated salary was dropped to under $100,000 (instead of $1million +) and put that extra money back into running the business OR lowering prices."  you would have no competent senior management at all. Even competent middle to junior management would say goodbye.

Large corporations  have to offer internationaly competitive remuneration packages in order to attract and retain management staff at senior levels.

Drat, this will affect me - the $8 postage included bag will now be $9
Better use my 10% discount to purchase some $8 bags @ $7.20 each before 1 July then

Kiwistamps are a good idea, because they will go up in value each time NZ post raise their prices.

You can use them for posting parcels and overseas letter though, they are worth whatever a standard letter is worth. eg currently 70 cents.

I knew you hadn't read it properly, again. It says "MY unnecessarily over-bloated salary" (if I was CEO as you asked) ... I said nothing about anyone else's salary, although I did say I would also stop bonuses for people simply doing what they're already being paid to do.

But you're right, worlwide management / celebrity salaries are ridiculously over-bloated (and only getting worse). It's way past time all governments clamped down and made a sensible "Maximum Wage" as well as a "Minimum Wage". Nobody on the planet is worth paying $million salaries to ... and anyone who thinks they are is simply a complete moron and a greedy pig.
