I know geeks are so busy emailing / social networking / "cloud"ing that they don't know what post mail is (except those who collect stamps), but NZ Post has announced they are raising postage prices again, both national and international ...

New Zealand Post has announced it is increasing postage costs as the company continues to feel the effects of higher costs and declining mail volumes.

As of July 1, the cost of sending a standard letter within New Zealand will rise from 70 cents to 80 cents, while postage on larger letters will increase by 20 cents.

The cost of sending some parcels and overseas letters is also being increased, with the International Economy parcel service being withdrawn in favour of International Air.

New Zealand Post says the increase in cost is necessary to keep the postal service working.

Postage costs last went up in 2012.

With the prices increases, lowering the number of delivery days, and trying to force silly "self-service" in branches, they're simply hastening the end of their own business. :-\

Anyone who does still post things should probably get a few boxes of pre-paid envelopes before the cost of those goes up.

Would try to convince businesses to continue with sending things by post. Sending items in the post should really be growing, with online businesses. something inbetween regular post, and couriering, which is very expensive in NZ. I know they do have parcel post, but the cost isn't much of a saving over couriering.

i still thought it was 45 cents to post a letter, shows you how long its been since i posted something.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

99.6% of items in our mail over a week is junk mail. If we only got mail we would only need delivery once a month.

95% of what I get in the post would be just as useful as an email.

Clearly the economies of scale are no longer there with more people giving up on regular post.

I get all my bank stuff mailed. The ozzie owned banks don't pass on the cost savings if you chose to get them emailed, and it helps the NZ economy and NZ post by getting them mailed, so helps to keep the price of postage down. I would print them out anyway for my records. If all of them were emailed, I suspect NZ post would be almost out of business, and we do still want a postal system of some type.

It wouldn't surprise me if these utility invoices get electronic'ised. Like you get a customer card that they can register with various companies and you go to the Post Office and swipe the card at the kiosk like the ATM or library machine and one can view the invoices onscreen and pay for them. Maybe one could then scan the document there like how library books are issued out, and enter the person's card no. like saved "favourite recipients". Or maybe even a TV appliance like a little Apple TV sized thing and they can swipe their card and do it at home ....

Sure, we have courier. But I am still thinking would letters dissapear ... hard to believe.

I am thinking, what reason do people really need send letters these days. Perhaps to mail a cheque? A hardcopy of in invoice to someone who doesn't have email? But I guess those things could be couriered in the future if NZ post disappeared.
I've got a huge number of kiwi stamps which I purchased when stamps were 50 cents, so they are going up in value, as you only need one kiwi stamp to mail a letter.

You can still write them, scan or photograph them, and then email it. Or use a courier envelope. I can see post always being around, but it will move to couriers to deliver it, and it will be significantly more expensive. At the moment the cost of posted letters is offset by volume, because posties will usually deliver to most houses down a road, so aren't making special deliveries. Couriers however are making special deliveries on a route, so the amount of time taken by them to delvier it is a lot higher.

NZ Post is in its death throws, with the passing generations and the adoption of technology they are rapidly becoming irrelevant, they need to diversify or will disappear. Maybe NZ Post could do Cloud services, document storage, etc etc.
