The 128GB iPads are still a pretty good deal (with GST added at border). the 16GB ones, not so good.

Additional note though, their NZ terms and conditions state that Australian Consumer Protection Law applies to your purchase (which is even more strict than NZ law is it not?) and that any faulty goods are serviced by an NZ based service agent, so not quite as bad as "ship it back" like with Amazon.

This one from Kogan would be $215+ in duty added on top(including GST)

This is encouraging about nz service agents. Does anyone know what they are like to deal with? I'm not going to an Australian court lol ; )

Cables can be a PITA.

I have, for example, a non-Apple USB-Lightening cable, came from VF shop with "Made for Apple" etc and cost about $40 I think (outrageous!).

I tried using it to tether my iPhone and my MB Air the other day. No can do. Yet the original Apple one works just fine.

It seems really odd that cables, the apparently simplest of things, can vary so much between two more or less identical offerings - and that it can be so hard to find out before time whether X cable will do the same as Y cable.

My first reaction reading this (and their T&Cs) was I was a little sceptical that Australian Consumer Protection Law would indeed extend to sales of goods exported to overseas consumers. Taking care of foreign consumers seems pretty altruistic for a regulator/legislature. More likely I thought that Kogan have just cut and pasted their Australian T&Cs wording.

That said, after a bit of quick googling it appears that is indeed the case - kudos to the Aus regulators. (ref here)

Section 5 of the Aus Consumer legislation (the CCA) applies the Act to conduct in relation to trade or commerce engaged in by –
- Bodies corporate or incorporated by carrying on business within Australia; or
- Australian citizens; or
- Persons ordinarily resident in Australia.

However, note that section 4(1) of the CCA defines “trade or commerce” to mean “trade or commerce within Australia or between Australia and places outside Australia”. If the conduct occurred in the course of trade to or from Australia, the protection of the Act will extend to overseas consumers and not just those in Australia: Wells v John R Lewis (International) Pty Ltd (1975) 25 FLR 194.2"

This is good to know for future reference, more generally re buying stuff from Aus. Though as Kyanar notes - and I quite agree - the key is local servicing in the event of repair. So if the all up landed cost (incl duty etc) makes financial sense, then with the NZ servicing in theory* you're no worse off than buying from online retailers within NZ.

*depending on their warranty claim handling practices.

What do I need to look for when buying a phone? To my understanding some don't work in NZ.

General rule of thumb (n.b. this does NOT apply to 4G services/phones) is, if it's advertised as compatible with Telstra 'Next-G' (I think that is what they used to call it) or Vodafone AU, then it supports 850MHz 3G and will work on Telecom NZ (and it's MVNOs), if it's advertised as compatible with Optus/Virgin/etc then it typically operates on the 900MHz 3G and is better fitted towards Vodafone NZ/2degrees.

From the 'Specs' tab:

2G Network (MHz)850 / 900 / 1800 / 19003G Network (MHz)850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100

It'd appear that it's quad-band and would work on all 3 NZ networks. Anyone else on similar view?

And if it doesn't mention a carrier on Kogan, it should work for all in NZ and Oz.

Kogan aren't too bad.
SOme of their android tablets are OK.
