Don't Sell Enything......

(they never seem to have anything I want on the rare occasions I go in; reminds me of Currys or Comet in the UK. "Can I help you sir?" "No, probably not but let's give it a try, eh?")

They turned DSE into a bastard version of Radio Shack. Everything they sell now seems to pre-packaged and not exactly what you need. Tried buying a can of compressed air to clean some home appliance - nope, not stocking anymore. Tried buying a clover leaf power cable for a US power brick - nope, don't have this. Looking for a 2.5 -> 3.5 HDD adapter and guess what? Nope, don't have it.

No large external drives when I looked when they last had a "sale" which made the prices somewhat normal, just 2 tb ones.

5 years ago i went into buy solder- nope we dont sell that anymore but we can sell you an overpriced soldering iron. Never been back.
If i want a flash new anything for the house ill use smiths city they at least show some interest in you.

I would have told them to send a courier around to come and get it, at a time convenient to me.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Their Aussie stores are going a lot better, but it looks like the Aussie management team has yet to turn their focus onto NZ...
I visited their store in Riccarton a few days ago and it was all but empty of staff, the stock was arranged in a desperate attempt to hide the bare shelves, and most things were DSE branded. I'm sure it's a great way to hold stock that you can't be price-spy'd on, hold great margin in, and that has your brand name front and centre... but do people want it?
Well, judging by the lack of customers... no.
It'll be DSE iPad cases, DSE HDD's, DSE headphones, DSE home theatre systems galore in the near future if they don't pull back from the brink!

I bought my S2 from them more than two years ago, they advertised them as unlocked. When I unpack it, it came with a DSE microUSB charger instead of a Samsung one.

It turns out my phone was a parallel import by them. I was not 100% happy because I think they should advertise it as a parallel import.

As I understand it the investment group that brought DSE stripped it down, cut staff pays, staffing levels and stock to make it look better on paper for resale value.

As most private equity groups attempt to do exactly what you said, it's interesting to see that DSE has listed on the Aussie stock exchange.
Cost savings are the obvious way to increase profits, however, it's quite easy for punters to see where money has been shaved if you walk into the stores...
Entire shelves are empty, staff are all but gone etc. And it's no surprise, the likes of Noel Leeming pay a lot more now the Warehouse has brought up the starting wage, and they have actual stock on the shelves!!

We have one DSE store in Palmerston North selling blister packed chinese junk the same as all the others.

I'm yet to buy anything at all from that store. I've been in maybe 5 or 6 times over the years.

Are they not still different companies? Last I heard, DSE in NZ was not the same as DSE in Aus...

If you ring up their customer services line you'll probably get an aussie on the other end so they would be the same. Also what someone else said is very accurate about cutting wages (via desecrating the commission system), cutting hours and product ranges. A lot of good people left after the 2012/13 holiday period when these changes started to come in

I also hear a fair few managers went on stress leave after all this took place.
Personally I would not shop at a retail shop that treats there staff with that kind of contempt.

This assumes that you know that this is going on prior to entering a shop.

Other than pumping gas for 6 months about 30 years ago I have no experience in retail. But if it's anything like large corporates ,what the customer sees is a long way removed from what goes on under the bonnet. It's often cringeworthy and sometimes even frightening.

Dick Smitih in Hobart now sell luggage I am reliably informed.

I doubt they'll still be in NZ (at least in their current form) in 5 years time.
