I'm a national support but even I find this ridiculous. The guy is working a job that means he works more hours and is therefore more stressed than 90% of people in this country and they bag him for taking a 3 day holiday (in the middle of the school holidays as well). Give it a break. Yes he's polling badly and all that means is the next couple of months leading up to the election will probably be even worse.

The election silly season is clearly upon us.

"Man takes weekend off to spend with family"

Seriously - that's what passes for political news now?

I'm no Cunliffe fan, but going after him for this is ridiculous.

Sorry, must have missed it, what was the poll result for Key with the holiday he is also taking?

Oh wait, that's right, there isn't a poll for Key. Only a million pieces fawning over him taking some holiday selfies.

The issue is I think that given the parlous state of the Labour Party his role, as leader, is exactly that - to lead. Which means inspiring and motivating his team to do their uttermost to win the election. He should be an example to all those many volunteers who give up their free time because of what they believe in.  Has he done this? The general consensus is no, he hasn't.  Last week John key was also on holiday and so Cunliffe could have had a free pass at making positive headlines in his absence.  He choose not to. And this is his third holiday this year - if you include January which is very quiet for all politicians.  No-one begrudges people taking time off to spend with their families, but this is much more than that.  It is about a leader who should leading from the front and not spending his time away from the limelight. And let's not forget that he meet with a convicted sex offender while on holiday - I take him at his word that he didn't know of this person's background before meeting him - but, geez. The Labour Party is sinking and it should all hands on deck - not the captain taking time off to go skiing.

Honestly, if the media didn't pick up on this non story, no one would even have known he was away. If someone can't have a few days away...

Given how intelligent he is i suppose he has been skyting to the media about this.

I suppose it is one way to get his name back into the media, and bad publicity is better than no publicity I guess.

and meanwhile John Key comes back from 10 days in Hawaii... sure not behind in the polls, but seriously does it make it different?? (and you can't score political points against an opponent who isn't there..)
double standards galore...

TimA: Yes, please do David. Give John key even more reason to win. (My preferred leader)
^Silly idea, but he has been a little "weird" recently.

I'm with you. I can't understand Labour right now. They just stumble at every step....

I think the point is that someone from within the Labour Party leaked/complained about him taking a few days (members of #teamkey wouldn't dare). This supposedly shows disunity in the Labour Party and there will already be members of that team ready to step over Cunliffe's (political) corpse, if the election is lost badly, and assume the leadership. The struggle for Labour is that they used the cult of personality when they had Helen Clark, but she was a once in a generation politician, and now they don't have her.

As far as I concerned it's still two months to the election, family time in the school holidays is important, give them a break. In fact I would be happier if the election campaign consisted of people popping up the day before the election and saying "vote for me" and that was it (fat chance).

As long as I didn't pay for it, doesn't worry me. If you need a holiday, you need a holiday. It's up to the individual.

Why would there be a poll? National is leading in the polls and Labour haven't been in the game since 2 years before they lost office. This wasn't a National vs Labour thread.

It's a thread about how the leader of a party trailing in the polls (actually polling the lowest in recent times) has taken a few days off skiing. You wouldn't expect the CEO of a company in serious trouble to take a holiday I don't believe, and this is more or less the same thing.

I don't have any issues with people taking holidays and spending time with family, but I think there is a time and place and it doesn't seem to me (nor some people in his own caucus) that this was the appropriate time.

Each to their own of course.

I see he is now commenting "if I had known how badly we were doing, I wouldn't have gone"..

How far up is ar$e is his head?

How inept is he that he doesn't know how his own party is polling?

Take a holiday or don't take a holiday, couldn't give a rats backside either way, but to not know how you are performing and to publicise it aswell?

good to see that #teamkey has a secret ally, go DC, you are helping National no end

I suspect he's referring (badly) to very recently released polls showing increased dropping rather than previous polls which were bad enough. Nevertheless I suspect 95% of the country does not really care about this holiday thing one way or the other.
