wasabi2k: that is actually awesome. I used to bike in from Massey - .

I couldn't agree more - I used to cycle in from Ranui,!

Lot of past tense there ... I wonder what the stats really are for cyclists using the cycleway ?

your anti cycling stance is well known Mark but given the rate payers are funding this what does it matter as all ratepayers need catered for not just motorists.

Mark: It's a new cyclepath going in .. for all those thou..hun...doz... ummm ... "the" cyclist, that goes along that road.

LOL Love it. I always think you'd have to be near suicidal to cycle in Auckland, let alone during Winter in the rain.

Not at all its quite safe and apart from the minority of idiots that cycle/walk drive its a nice safe city to bike around compared to most.

Oh I'm not anti cycling, I'm anti stupid people and stupid ideas.
To me fouling up and complicating already busy intersections to allow a few dozen cyclists a day to have a dedicated lane is a dull idea .. A better idea might be putting the money into providing better education for young people so they grow into old cyclists/drivers/pedestrians who know the road rules.

Where's Peter Reader and his 'Here we go..." when we need him?wink

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

But that's not what I said.

My gripe is that lots of money gets spent on putting in cycleways (which limits that moneys use to the few people on them .. if they use them at all) when it could be better spent on educating people on how to actually ride on the existing roads (so they know to actually obey traffic lights, stop signs, zebra crossing, one way streets, how to indicate intentions etc).

I also feel there are a lot of stupid cyclists out there who get themselves into an avoidable accident and blame usually gets pointed at the drivers of motorvehicles first.

I saw a cyclist ride through a completely red light yesterday in the rain on dominion road.

I see motorists doing illegal and stupid things all the time too...  Perhaps no more improvements should be made to roads for cars as the money would be better spent on education?

/me sighs.

Potential physical consequences for a mistake in a car are much less serious in most cases if you make a mistake in a car and end up being on the receiving end of an impact. Doesn't really matter if you are in the right if you are dead!

Mistakes are much less serious for the driver but they are for everyone else.

Where as mistakes by a cyclist are likely to only seriously hurt the cyclist

and to sum up, cyclists are legally entitled to use the road and have to obey the road rules as do pedestrians and motorists. Also cycle ways are needed to ensure the separation of cars and bikes to ensure safety of both,

It would be hard pushed for anybody to state that cyclists are responsible for more accidents than cars in fact ACC figures on car v cyclist accidents would say the other so maybe focus on educating all road users on its use with an emphasis on motorists knowing that they drive a potentially lethal machine.

To be honest the car v bike argument is just silly as we go tribal and neither party wins just accept that neither party has exclusive right of way and to share with care.

At least we haven't had the usual ignorant rant of not paying there way so that's a plus.

Yeah sorry I know this argument has been thrashed to death in many other threads, it still boggles my mind that the same arguments are used again and again. Thanks jeffnz, voice of reason. /end posting
