There are a lot of people whinging on Facebook and the ONE news comment feed about how two best friends (capable of making their own decisions with the same free will as the rest of us) getting married for fun is incredibly wrong and how it is somehow going to totally change the routine of their normal daily lives along with their personal beliefs about marriage or something.

It's two dudes scribbling on a piece of paper to go overseas guys...Nothing more, nothing less. If you hold marriage as a sacred thing before your god or for other reasons, good for you. But don't stop other people from having fun.

You've got to have balls to do that though! (No pun intended)

I would have thought marrying for the same stupid reasons everyone else does would just cement the practice?

As for RWC, I'd more likely marry someone to not have to do to the damn thing. E3/CES however I would.

Let's devaluate marriage some more, because it's just a piece of paper right? When you don't need it anymore, you can discard it, just like the partner you've lost interest in. That's a great message to be sending young people, isn't it. Besides the legal frivolity, they're making a mockery of something a lot of people regard as a sacred union while purposely trying to rile people up because that's the only way this lousy station can apparently get ratings. Hey, there's no such thing as bad publicity, right?

A little off-topic so I'm sorry about that, but you guys raise an interesting question. If we're all okay with marrying whomever we want, why can't we marry as many of whomever we want as long as we make the legal ownership paperwork, etc. check out?

It's actually quite an interesting topic, I think. And one that dovetails nicely into the same sex marriage debate.

We've been watching watching a reality TV show on NetFlix called Sister Wives (don't judge; everyone has their shameful guilty pleasures ;-)), which follows the lives of a polygamist family in the US. For the most part, it is hard to fault their existence. They are a large, loving family, and the kids all seem pretty well adjusted. All participants were willing, and complicit in what they were entering into. They also are not forcing their polygamist beliefs onto their kids. Apart from the multiple wives aspect, you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart from what society would deem a "normal" family.

I say "for the most part", but there is one aspect that doesn't sit well with me. It is a very one-sided deal, with the husband getting quite angry if the topic of bringing in another husband is ever raised. But then again, all participants knew the rules when entering into the relationship, so if they're happy to do it, surely it should be their decision.

It's exactly that though, surely?

The relationship itself and resulting personal commitment is far more important than any kind of ceremony or certificate and is ultimately all that matters, however enjoyable or satisfying a formal celebration and declaration party may be for some.

For my wife and I, our marriage after some 4 months or so of being together was a means to an end; namely, her Visa and our continued stay in the UK as a happy couple.

11 years later, it has been useful again in getting my visa for NZ and in the intervening time it was critical in ensuring we could live and work together in the U.A.E without risk of deportation or worse.

Given that neither of us are members of any sky-pixie clubs, nor adhere to any particular pre-conceived ideas regarding absolutes of morality, the whole thing has mostly been about jumping through legal hoops in order to somehow prove our commitment to each other to various officious third parties whom we would otherwise not give two figs for.

I appreciate that when questions of money and legality and property and parenthood etc. are concerned, it is important to have some kind of yard stick with which to help find fitting resolution in dispute but even that can be a perilous line to walk if traditional Western ideas of marriage are the sole arbiter.

Still married, still happy after 11 years. Would still be together without the legally binding pledge.

Speaking as someone from a broken home, I'm GLAD my mother discarded that piece of paper rather than continue in marital hell.

Society needs to somehow reach a consensus on whether 'marriage' is a religious/cultural ritual, or a legal arrangement. If the former then the state should butt out, and if the latter then you lot have no business making any moral judgements about how or why anyone else might choose to enter into a marriage.

The problems is it started out life as the former, and evolved into the latter.
