I had some billboard type space a few years back where I lived and put up a "space to rent" sign that worked and I leased the space for $30 a month (about a meter and half square) for over a year.

Did you organise to have the billboards printed yourself or supplied by the advertiser?

I'd imagine it would be appealing for some of the smaller businesses in the area to not have to worry about printing their own however it depends if it's worth the hassle.

The advert was for a property and the owner got the whole sign made herself

The comments about wannabee lawyers and council approval etc doesn't surprise me I think when you converse on a site like Geekzone you have to have a reasonable amount of confidence and be prepared for criticism. A. The board is predominately kiwi I'm guessing and we know how they converse.

European "Good Morning!"
Kiwi "excuse me?"
European "Good Morning!"
Kiwi "What makes you think I will accept your opinion on the prospect of the day?"

B. You have a whole group of above average people with time on there hands ....go figure

I assume nowadays that the golden days of the wild west New Zealand ("The 80's") are long gone. Assume there is a fee for everything and a law to go with it.

So if you didn't pay too much attention could it have just looked like a real estate sign for YOUR property?

I won't mention the stereotypical Englishman sitting on the train doing his crossword conversing with no one about the weather or that your example was stolen from Monty Python.

And entire teams of people looking for new things to make laws about and charge a fee for.  I think they call them "Councils".
