I have a 2m x 30m wooden fence on a fairly busy road (connecting two main roads) in a commercial / residential area a thought I might as well utilise by leasing some billboard space.

What's the most efficient way to go about this?

Not sure if it will be high traffic enough to go through one of the big agents and don't mind handling things myself; just have to work out pricing and an efficient way of printing  / affixing said signage.

(Previous owner had various billboards up, neighbour further down the same fence has billboards up and other houses on the street have billboards up [non-election related]. I'm happy to take the risk and do it until I get told not to but thank you for attempting to save me from myself)..

Did you organise to have the billboards printed yourself or supplied by the advertiser? 

I'd imagine it would be appealing for some of the smaller businesses in the area to not have to worry about printing their own however it depends if it's worth the hassle.

The point about the council regulations is valid - a company I worked for was regularly pinged for putting up signs in unauthorised places, the reality is that if the business that's advertising is not occupying the space then it's usually against council by laws.

However you can always use the 'ask for forgiveness not permission' scenario and see how you go.

Just as an extra thing to think about - will the sign attract taggers and other undesirables - sometimes it's just not worth the hassle.

Steady on mate, it actually seems like pretty sensible advice to me...


EDIT: Might also be worth considering that different city councils might have different bylaws about this and different approaches to enforcing them, so you might get a bunch of advice on here that doesn't even apply as it relates to a different city.  Which makes KiwiNZs suggestion even more sensible.

I don't see how this is nothing useful to the thread based on the supplied information? The information that several other people and the previous owner had billboards up was not contained within the first thread.

We just sold a house and the local council demanded we remove one of the signs as they only allow 1 per property (we have street frontage on two streets, we had to choose which one had the sign). Some councils are really strict on this sort of thing and prohibit it, (generally for "traffic safety" reasons).

Some people would not know about the councils by-laws so in some areas this would be a no-go, better to find this out before selling, printing and affixing the sign.

Why does every GZ discussion have to turn into a pseudo-legal debate; can we not leave that up to http://www.lawspot.org.nz/

I would love to think that the GZ community actually cared about my personal sake and well-being (with concerns of tagging, consents etc) however I can't help but feel it becomes more of a case of [cynicism / trolling / tall-poppy syndrome] against anyone who tries to break the mould.

Then again maybe it's just a case of cynicism on my part..

The reason I suggested to check with the local council is a school in our area did this to raise additional funding for their sports teams. The council made them remove the advertisements as they breached town planning regs etc.

Why not the first response? Adblocker doesn't work in the physical environment yet and why should I have to subscribe to my neighbour's income to keep signs off his fence?

In Wellington for example you are permitted to have a 0.5m2 max sign related to your own activity but you'd have to go for Resource Consent for anything else other than a limited number of temporary things like real estate and elections.

Political signs in my street have a very temporary arrangement. Usually till 3 AM the following night.

We're not talking about your suburban front yard here; as stated it's a (predominately) commercial / (some) residential area.. I'm probably the only fence in the street without signs at the moment.

The pseudo-lawyers have moved on, and now the pseudo-philosophers are moving in... lol

(Ok, I know I'm not winning any friends here, I'll stop now....and maybe startup a thread we can all group-think about..)
