gzt: I don't want to see this here and I'm surprised at who started it. It's not a great plan. Obviously Key himself knows about it because he recorded the message. Most people react very badly to phone spam.

Many of the parties and candidates have done this for years, as far as I'm aware.

Funnily enough, I got the John Key robocall as I was actually reading this thread.

Annoying, and it's not like it will impact my voting decision. My vote is based on party policies, not marketers carefully chosen advertorials. In any event, I'm out of town on the weekend, so I have already voted.

This is the first time I heard of a recorded call from a candidate let alone a party leader in NZ. I am wondering how it is targeted. It seems to me the risk is very high. Whenever I am called away from a task or a meal to answer any telemarketing type call (I put the phone down) and my first response after that is usually unprintable.

As above, I am fairly sure a number of parties and candidates have done it for a while. We received multiple robo-calls from a certain red party last two elections. This year is the first I have received one from the blueberries as well, though.

we got the same message, I just hung up.
They are using the electoral role which even the electoral act has a problem with marketers using it, they get away with it if calling from overseas
Although I have an unlisted number, when we moved house we kept that number,
Upon changing our details in the electoral role we now get heaps of calls and a lot more addressed junk mailers.
I'm thinking about a implementing some sort of whitelist , even Sky TV keep calling and we have gone to quite some length including putting our details on their do not call service.

Just recieived the call.
Caller ID said "Overseas Number 0000", which is weird?

I'm wondering if it's legitimate. I'd be more inclined NOT to vote for a political party that cold called me!

Electioneering has closed. If anyone gets one after midnight it's a breach of the electoral act.

Same for hoardings I think. I have my eye on a Colin Craig his minions may have forgotten.

I disagree - I think on the whole most of us in Nz are too apathetic to take action on a whole raft of issues. We politely roll over and let politicians do what they want.

The days of Tim Shadbolt and the like seems to have passed. THe best way to deal with harrassment by politicians is to reposnd in kind, and when enough respond in kind then they too will stop harrassing us.

Reciprocity is an effective tool. My message was about as long as Johns, however I spent far less time making it (thus the cruddy content) and cost the tax payer far less.

Well it is effective - it effectively peeved off everyone I know who got one.

This could end up as a thread on its own :) How to deal with annoying callers.

Swear ( I can do that in Hindi, Filipino and a number of other similar languages)
Tell them you will get the ohuse hold owner - put the phone down and walk away.
My favourite - just say yes to everything they ask or tell you and see how long it takes them to click. So you have typed in the remote hacking connection number. "YESSSS". But i cant see you, "YESSS". Are you sure you typed in the number right? "YESSS" what type of computer do you have? "YESSSS" .....
