I officially decree Stuff as a current affairs magazine website and not a serious news website at all and I challenge all Geekzone members to boycott the site from now on, unless you want to know who left the "X survivor kitchen" last night...

Disappointingly NZ Herald is going in this direction too...

There is a definite gap in this country that needs filling - a web site that provides good coverage of NZ and world news without all the dribble and rubbish, written by journalists that are not extremely biased and can actually write proper English. Alas, I fear it will never happen...

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

It's equally a comment on the 'fans' who are 'grieving' for someone they have never encountered other than on television...!

You realise the actor's fine right? This lead article on stuff is about a character in a soap being killed off. Meanwhile, the ACTUAL Australian teenager shot by police after stabbing two of them in Aussie is relegated to a smaller section beside it.

One of the news sites (Herald? Stuff? Don't remember) ran a similar story a while back for some Shortcake Street character that died. I presumed it was the actor, but no.

You're right - it won't.

Immediacy and gossip are far more profitable than accuracy and news. Stuff.co.nz has been an entertainment site for a long time now.

Here was me thinking that the ACTOR got shot, rather than the character.

Of the local news sources, it seems in order of responsiveness: ZB, 3 News, One News, NZ Herald/Stuff. ZB normally has a basic headline/story up with 'More Soon' and then 3 News/One News are one of the first to get actual decent content up.

My online subscription to the London Times costs me around $200 a year but is money well spent.

I'd love to see the Herald, Dom Post and Press all rolled up into the New Zealand Times and distributed electronically to print presses in the regions.

A single national daily newspaper, with a World section more than 2 pages long and full of actual news, would be tremendous.

I pay for access to the new york times and guardian, worth every penny.

When nz Herald goes paywall, it won't be missed at all.

But maybe a paywall is exactly what is necessary to pay (investigative) journalists properly and to keep "newspapers" afloat in the digital age. The problem we are always faced with comes back to the fact that we area tiny little country that can barely afford to sustain the level of infrastructure we expect with the population that is working.

I subscribe to the print edition of the Dompost, and it kind of pisses me off a bit that others get most of it for free online. I would be more than happy to pay a subscription for an online edition. Since when do you get something for nothing?

Maybe by making everyone paying their way, it would journalistic standards, and provide a sustainable business model..

This really ground my gears today. I'm not a fan of home and away but my initial reaction was that someone actually died. I read the story and realised they were talking about a TV CHARACTER. Seriously, WTF? How is this the headline story on a MSM site?

Yeah, sites like Stuff are little better than gossip rags like woman's weekly nowadays (IMO).

If the likes of Kim Kardashian does a poo that looks like the Mona Lisa, it's front page news in the "Entertainment" section.

Yes it become a chicken and egg situation with regard to paying for something and hoping the extra funds is used for investigative reporting.

Problem is I don't believe it will, seems the quality of journalism have reached such a low level that I don't have any faith that a paywall will improve the quality of journalism.

I fear that the extra funds will just be used to increase the dividend paid the Australian owners.

I found the quality of journalism over the election to be abysmal and disheartening with the media all pushing and shoving themselves to the lowest point.

Depressed.
