I had a telecom guy come knocking some time ago before the rebrand to spark, trying to sell me adsl, I told him I had 100mbit ufb and he looks on his ipad tells me thats not possible. I told him I was getting it via a ubiquiti link from 1km away, pointed to the dish mounted on side of balcony overlooking henderson. He said "thats good, thats good" and could leave fast enough. I also dont bother with a land line, never had it connected since I bought the house a couple years ago, hence never get any telemarketing calls. I use my mobile for all my calls and telemarketers dont want to pay to call a mobile.

Ms Chetwin said everybody had an implied licence to enter your property and knock on your door. But you can revoke a salesperson’s licence to enter your property by displaying a “Do Not Knock” sticker. If a door-to-door seller ignores the sticker, they’re likely to be trespassing, she said.

If I recall, this is an interesting bit of law, I seem to recall a criminal on bail used a similar part of law to effectively ban the police from entering his property to check on his bail.

The Consumer application is pretty good though ideally the sign should read something like:

Doorknockers Prohibited

- No salespeople
- No religion

(and perhaps a quote of the actual section # of legislation).

I also want to see a ban of telemarketers as well - honestly, if you as an organisation are trying to get me to use your product either by door to door or telemarketing then your organisation instantly goes on my "don't do business with them" list. If I'm interested then build a decent website with all the information I need and then let me make the decision on my own without having a sales pitch rammed down my throat. TelstraClear used to do door to door sales before Vodafone bought them out and honestly it really grinds my gears having to deal with that.

We used to have a sign near the front of the house that read something like "Hawkers and religious bodies keep out".

Worked really well until door sales people started knocking anyway because they didn't know what a hawker was.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

I have a sign on my front door asking sales people and religious organisations to leave the properly immediately. Many still come to the back door. I'll often just go to the back door and if I don't recognize them I'll wave through the glass and not even open it, then walk off. They get the idea.

I'll be getting a sticker for my letterbox.

My late mother mistook JW doorknockers for long-lost distant relatives. They didn't fess-up to the case of mistaken identity until they'd been served morning tea, commenting that it was the best welcome they'd ever received.

Back in the days when "Hawker" was a common term it was usually somebody with goods with him like the Raleigh or Bon Brush man. The ones to watch for then had a boot load of encyclopedias.

I'm not surprised that Genesis have stopped using door to door. Their last effort had our neighbours ringing around to warn about the sales guy.

Certainly not a commonly used term these days. I have used it on occasion though, but only when talking with older generations I guess. "Hawking - the art of selling find for a living" is one dictionary definition.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.
