Behodar: Further complicating things, as it's over $1000 you'll need to register as an importer. I'm not sure how long that takes.

Applying for a client code requires filling out a form and providing photo ID. It doesn't need to be a certified copy, just a scan and e-mail. Turnaround time should be about one business day (20 hours in my case, sent outside of business hours), and NZ Post may be able to assist with getting this processed more quickly.
The odd thing is, once you have these codes issued, nobody ever asks for them. I assume someone is matching this up this information in the background, but it does seem quite pointless.
