Further complicating things even more, as it's over $1000, you also need a supplier code, if one doesn't already exist.

Applying for a client code requires filling out a form and providing photo ID. It doesn't need to be a certified copy, just a scan and e-mail. Turnaround time should be about one business day (20 hours in my case, sent outside of business hours), and NZ Post may be able to assist with getting this processed more quickly.

The odd thing is, once you have these codes issued, nobody ever asks for them. I assume someone is matching this up this information in the background, but it does seem quite pointless.

Just remember NZ POST are the carrier and not the customs agent, if you wanted a full service then you would have needed to engage a customs broker or carrier which provides a full service.

CrispyBacon: +Jase2985 What sort of self respecting company still notifies customers through the mail?! A lot of headaches could have been avoided if they were to simply send an email.

Sending a letter by post is standard procedure for goods that come via regular Post and some freight companies. I'm not sure whether this differs with YouShop (as I haven't imported goods that required duty to be paid). Post do not have their own customs agents, it's up to you to find one or deal with Customs.

Companies such as UPS / FedEx have their own customs agents who will typically contact you via phone if your details are on the goods. You can then choose to pay them or use your own Customs agent of choice to get the goods cleared.

Based on a few of your comments you clearly don't import hoods regularly or know how the processes work. Being impatient isn't going to make the process any quicker - if you wanted goods in a hurry and didn't want to have to deal with customs you should have chosen other options to get your goods here.

If more than one package arrive to same name/address in the course of a few days NZ Customs may stop them all and charge a single fee + GST.

FWIW I had a package arrive via Youshop on 21/12 which is held for clearance, I received the letter today with details of payment. So the letter should come through this week, if not next.

Just to add my 2c, I recently ordered an Alpine head unit from Australia.

It was stopped by customs as the declared value was $850AUD I had the tracking number so I sent an e-mail to customs who asked for some extra details and sent me the bill.

I paid the bill and in about 10 min of my payment it was released and with me the next day.

Also the estimated time is not counting time in customs, never has and never will.

For what it's worth, I'm waiting for a package from UPS that required customs clearance. UPS called me, I paid the tax to them, and the tracking changed to "Your package was released by the clearing agency". Now, a day later, the status is showing as "We're working to resolve technical issues temporarily preventing us from transmitting information to the clearing agency".

I'm a little confused! If the package had truly cleared then why do I care that they're having problems transmitting information? The very fact that they're telling me about problems makes me suspect that it hasn't actually cleared. Nothing like conflicting information to keep you on your toes...

Edit: As of 9:45 it's showing as cleared (again).

Edit 2: It just turned up today, which means it must've cleared earlier. So the "technical issues" were completely irrelevant after all!

they have millions of parcels and tens of thousands of queries ... i don't think they are too worried about one enquiry, as bothering as it could be to a customer :(

Hey! Haven't checked my email in a few weeks, as I've been busy with my new PC!

Yeah, I got the parcels eventually - but it took about two weeks to get from "held for clearance" to my door. Customs was a pain in the *ss - they never once contacted me via phone or email (of which I had used both to leave a message) and I ended up getting notification via snail mail with instructions on how to pay duty, a day full week and a half after my parcels were held for clearance. NZ Post has a helpful live support feature, and although the person I chatted with wasn't particularly helpful, the service in general has been in the past, and is just great. I am now using my lovely new PC, which I have dubbed "Axiom" (I briefly considered "Eris", Greek god of discord, given the heel I went through to get it here, but the build process was relatively smooth, everything is neat and organised down to the cables, and I couldn't be happier)

Overall: Customs sucks, importing sucks, and the only thing I can fault NZ Post on is the fact that an employee just dumped over $1000 of sensitive hardware over the gate, during one of the wettest springs we have had in years.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a level 30 Siren in Borderlands 2 to attend to!
