Has anyone else had experience in dealing with customs?
Two of my parcels have in been "held for clearance" for several days now, since the 23rd. Neither NZPost nor customs has contacted me or asked for any action on my part. I used NZPost's live support feature, and was told to contact customs - I left a message and an email and so far all I have received in return is an automated email with some "useful information" stating that I should first contact my carrier before customs, as they "do not physically hold parcels". I have not been unable to arrange clearance with NZpost thus far, and customs refuses to return my messages. $1181.69 worth of PC components were meant to arrive some time TODAY, but instead are stuck in customs limbo, and no one will tell me what the f*ck is going on! Should I wait for Monday then attempt to arrange clearance with NZPost, or somehow contact customs?

I have no experience with your dilemma sorry, but so far they've only had one business day.  Maybe a little more patience is required.

You need to relax.

There have been 2 days of public holidays and the busiest time of the year for mail and parcels. If you were relying on goods to arrive on a certain date at this time of year you really do need to adjust your expectations a little.

they have probably sent you out a form asking for payment of duty and GST. the last day for snail mail was the 24th, and doesnt resume till the 29th, so you could expect it after then.

there is no need to panic about it, it will get resolved, you just ordered at the wrong time of the year

unfortunately you will just have to hurry up and wait

It took NZ Post six days to get notice to me the last time I had a package that was "Held for clearance", so if you need to pay GST or duty, you may still receive one. If not, it's most likely just a processing delay due to the holidays.

I didn't read the details regarding the value. The package will be held for GST.

Call NZ Post at the International Mail Centre. They rarely answer the phone, so leave a message for someone to call you back. Don't expect a phone call until Monday.

They will be able to give you the customs number, which you can then use to contact customs and pay the GST which is owed. Once that happens they will allow NZ Post to release the package. If you are in Auckland, and don't mind a trip out to the airport, you can collect the item from the mail centre yourself.

I believe the number you want is 0800 478 287 option 2.

I tried leaving a message but no one ever got back to me... I guess I'll just have to keep trying.

+Jase2985 What sort of self respecting company still notifies customers through the mail?! A lot of headaches could have been avoided if they were to simply send an email.

They could only do that if they had your e-mail address, which they probably don't.

The customs number should be included with the tracking information. Waiting six days is unacceptable.

I should point out, the only reason I waited six days was because I had no idea the package was coming. It was an item sent in error, more than a year after I cancelled the order.

as noted below how many packages have you received with your email visible on the shipping docket? If its coming from overseas, NZPost/what ever company in NZ is sending it on, has nothing to do with the labling of the package and are just contracted to deliver it once its cleared customs.

take that sort of problem up with the international companies that kiwis are buying products off

NZPost should have my email address, considering it is REQUIRED for a YouShop account, and I subscribed to parcel tracking updates!

Further complicating things, as it's over $1000 you'll need to register as an importer. I'm not sure how long that takes.
