Tourism is one of the best industries any country could have.

The benefits are many and the cost to our environment is so low.

I don't know if tourists are causing a big problem on our roads.

The perception may be bias it may be true.

But, if there is a real problem, then just spend money to help solve it.

Either provide training for tourists or give them cheap travel.

Wow, that's awful, with a relatively positive outcome. Definitely see a physio, but most a crap so go see a proper doctor if required.

Yep, the only really tragic part was our luck didn't extend to the lotto draw the night after the crash :-P

Planning to find a physio this coming week, only been home a few days and everything is closed.

DarthKermit: My fave Darwin Award of all time was the guy who tried to use a golf ball washer to wash his testicles. The machine tore them off (but didn't kill him) thereby removing him from the gene pool.

Who washes their testicles? Keeps the flies away from your fish and chips.

I dunno. This is what I found on Google:
"Based on a bet by the other members of his threesome, Everitt Sanchez tried to wash his own "balls" in a ball washer at the local golf course.

Proving once again that beer and testosterone are a bad mix, Sanchez managed to straddle the ball washer and dangle his scrotum in the machine. Much to his dismay, one of his buddies upped the ante by spinning the crank on the machine with Sanchez's scrotum in place, thus wedging them solidly in the mechanism.

Sanchez, who immediately passed his threshold of pain, collapsed and tumbled from his perch. Unfortunately for Sanchez, the height of the ball washer was more than a foot higher off the ground than his testicles are in a normal stance, and the scrotum was the weakest link.

Sanchez's scrotum was ripped open during the fall, and one testicle was plucked from him forever and remained in the ball washer, while the other testicle was compressed and flattened as it was pulled between the housing of the washer, and the rotating machinery inside.

To add insult to injury , Sanchez broke a new $300 driver that he had just purchased from the pro shop, and was using to balance himself. Sanchez was rushed to the hospital for surgery, and the remaining threesome were asked to leave the course. (NB: This last one wouldn't normally count, because the idiot didn't die. But because he cannot reproduce as a result of his qualifying act of stupidity, we have allowed it.)"

linw: Gotta admit, tourists are a worry. However, we have just got back from driving Picton to Motueka, Motueka to Westport and Westport to Picton and I have to say all slower vehicles pulled over to let the faster ones pass. Was impressed.

Luck is a handy thing to take with you when driving!

Hey, do you live in Picton, or were you off the ferry? I'm guessing the latter. If you avoided the nausea inducing Queen Charlotte Drive, and took SW62, you'd have passed within half a k of my house at Rapaura.

I live in Plimmerton. Took the windy one!! It looks shorter to my GPS!

When we first arrived in NZ we ended up renting in Plimmerton for a year - purely by random chance.

A couple of years ago when my father was dying, I went back to the UK for 2 weeks. Whilst at the parentals, I was assisting in tidying and came across a pile of photos taken when my grandfather visited relatives in NZ in the late 70's. One of them was him standing on Plimmerton station platform!

True story...

It takes roughly the same time going the long way via SH1,62,6 but it's the route most locals take. I almost never drive QCD because my Pajero is tall and soft and the windy road makes you want to throw up.

QCG would by fun on a motorcycle or sports car, but then you get back to where this thread was on the previous page... tourists coming the other way on the wrong side of the road! Happens several times a year. Especially the camper vans that oooh and aaah at the scenery instead of looking where they are going.

Yeah, would go the 'long' way next time.

I always think of the tourist drivers gawking at the scenery, too. If you are attending to the road you don't see much, so, after spending many thousands to get to NZ, it must be galling to realise you hadn't seen much! Hence the temptation to 'gawk' and become a road hazard.
