BTR: Surely if you buy and iPhone from Dick smiths and you have a hardware fault the rumoured Apple store will just tell you to take it back to the store you bought it from....

Doubt it.. that's not how Apple works. They honour warranties regardless of where a product was purchased in NZ.

Plus, can you still get an iPhone from Dick Smiths? Can you get anything from there?

Nah, Apple is awesome like that. Their "Genius Bar" is awesome for support and/or repairs. I've been into the Apple store in Sydney a few times with broken hardware (macbook power adapter and ipad) and they've replaced them at no charge. The macbook adapter was about 3 years out of warranty too.

Depends on if you're trying to claim the AppleCare warranty (1 year standard, 2 additional years if AppleCare Protection Plan is purchased) or a retailers own extended warranty.

If it's 18 months in and you've only got the 1 year AppleCare but an extended Dick Smith warranty (for example), you would go directly to Dick Smith for the warranty claim.

If it's 18 months in and you've got the AppleCare Protection Plan you can go straight to Apple.

You can do this now by phoning Apple directly, no need to have a physical store in NZ for that - but having the physical store will make the process a lot faster if you can go there.

In 2014 I returned home to NZ after 30 years in Sydney and I really really really miss my Apple store. Whilst there I used the genius bar several times and can attest to its fabulousness. Most times when in town I would call into the temple according to "Steven Jobs" to pray.

Now all us Kiwis need is an Ikea store!!

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

My dad's ipad 3 exploded. Very much out of warranty. The store just handed him a new Air (Air 2?). I bet it's a lot more hassle over the phone. Did you plug it in an Apple plug sir? Are you sure you didn't ...

I doubt it.

I bought an ipad from JB Hifi in Wellington and had it replaced two weeks later in the Apple store in Barcelona because it had died.

Great customer service, the only complaint is that they are extremely busy so even with an appointment you can end up waiting 30-45 mins to see someone.

I had a similar experience with the San Francisco Apple store. Not long after getting my iPhone 4, I purchased a replacement back for it. This was cheap and nasty, and as a result one of the screws had a habit of falling out. I noticed I'd finally lost it in SF, and went in to the Apple Store to query how much it would cost to get a replacement fitted. Apparently the answer is $0, even though the screw was lost due to an after market third party part replacement :-)

Somewhat relevant. Noel Leemings have opened a branch in the Wellington CBD, in Featherston street directly across the intersection from Dick Smiths.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

The wife's 5s has a 'standard' 24mth warranty from Spark, I'd assume Apple would only honour their standard 12mth warranty?

Nope, they officially acknowledge CGA now (it's in their online support documentation somewhere).

They made Yoobee replace my 2.5 year old macbook air battery under warranty.

Those things will make it more attractive to international visitors.
