Actually, it looks like a great way to make money. Charge $4.99 for an app called 'Am I Going Down?', which, when launched, displays the word 'NO' in large, friendly letters. You will never have a dissatisfied customer.

I'm guessing you mean this as in, in the very rare occasion it is supposed to say YES, getting a refund on $4.99 or giving a bad rating is probably going to be very low in that person's to do list.

All very well seeing >4m:1 chance against crashing, but those same people buy Loto tickets where the odds show they are four or five times less likely to win, and still hope to beat this odds.

I worry about odds. Apparently someone gets struck by lightning ten times a day. Who is this unlucky person, and are they OK? We should be told!

I worry about odds too. I worry about people's inability to appropriately estimate them. If you're afraid of flying, why aren't you so terrified of driving that you faint at the sight of a Top Gear ad? Or the thought of having a shower? You could say it's because flying is unnatural, but so is driving, having a shower, or posting on Geekzone. I honestly don't get it.

Hilarious thread, thanks for a good laugh everyone! :D

Have experienced a few interesting drops and side landings in turboprops. Can get a little bumpy on the larger airlines sometimes too, but must say my flights with the huge A380 has been more or less rock solid. So if you want excitement, go for the smallest possible plane.

BTW: Here is a flight going around and around Münich airport last july, on our return to NZ

(Pre 911 obviously but..)

Me and the other half (who is not a good flier) flying out of NY to London, sitting by the gate.

Spying a goth in the full back uniform swinging back from a duty free whiskey bottle, the other half whispers "I hope he doesn sit near us.."

We board and of course the goth is supposed to sit next to the other half so I swap seats.

He obviously isnt isnt a good flier either and there is a alot of sneaking drinking from the bottle as we taxi out to take off.

Takeoff starts and he begins to mumur/chant in a quiet voice... not sure what.

Plane lifts off.... gothic chanting now audible.

" we are going to die, we are going to dire, we are going to die"

Other half gets more tense. Goth then passes out from the booze.

Tense slow flight to Heathrow follows.

I watched an awesome vid of a plane that ran out of fuel between CONUS and Hawaii.

The pilot had an 'air frame parachute' that actually parachuted the entire plane gently to the sea. The pilot obviously recalled his training and had the door open to facilitate a swift exit before the plane splashed down. The video showed him calmly inflate a liferaft, hop in and float away to be collected by a passing cruise ship.

All we need now is a much bigger version for commercial airliners....! ;-)

Some years ago, I did a little JavaScript page to allow people to check the odds of whether a particular email they received was a scam or not. (e.g. if it was from Nigeria, a person you'd never heard of, an anonymous email provider like Yahoo, it referred to an engineer who died horribly on the Sagbama Expressway, the chances of it being legit were 1 in 100,000,000,000). To try to give the user a sense of perspective, I compared it to a range of other possible events... having twins, triplets, quadruplets, dying today, winning Lotto some time in your life, winning Lotto today, getting struck by lightning some time in your life (1:12,000), getting struck by lightning today (1:370,000,000), getting hit by a meteorite, getting killed by a meteorite (1:700,000 btw)

FWIW, driving on a rainy night is about as dangerous as flying in a light aircraft (Cessnas, etc). Commercial aircraft are *much* safer.

How do you calculate that one? To the best of my knowledge, only one person has ever been recorded to have been struck by a meteorite, and she only get a nasty bruise (because it had already fallen through the roof of her house). I don't think anyone was killed by the Russian one a year or two ago, although there were injuries of various severities due mainly to broken glass.
