I find Twitter pretty useful for that. Or at the least it's useful for getting a wide variety of viewpoints on a single topic very quickly so you can decide your own perspective.

It's like a real life soap opera sometimes. Like the story last week about the author who made comments about the government. In one day there were so many "live" updates it felt like a TV drama. Meanwhile hundreds die in Nigeria - who cares?

All they seem to promote are tales of "death, danger and disease". Just looking at the headlines right now (1:40pm - 2 Feb)

- Son on Murder Charge
- $30m gambling fraud charges
- Bar patrons watch office sex romp
- Council cash crisis
- Star's sword murder charge

4 out of 5 are crime/legal related. Easy stories to write and promote. While I am sure all these stories have their place, somewhere, in a newspaper this is such tabloid stuff and not serious news.

No idea, except that I would pay for it.

There is an investigative journalism publication in France with a $100/year subscription that sounds like it is doing pretty well (it had a significant investment from a wealthy benefactor to get started though). Interestingly a publication like that is even more badly needed in France, who as I understand it have no legislative equivalent of our OIA. I would easily pay twice that for a serious independent hard news outlet.

I keep pondering registering something like

curatedstuff.co.nz

Where a group of people would weed out the stories about kittens and irrelevant guff about celebrities ("The week in celebrity Instagrams" - I'm not making that up!) and publish a list of current stuff.co.nz articles which actually qualify (to me!) as news.

I'd also assign all stories a laziness metric and a score for apparent research so a news post along the lines of "QANTAS A380 CRASHES: DEVELOPING STORY" which is based on a twitter status update from an unknown person would score incredibly low on both those metrics.

But then I figured it would be a fulltime job and clearly there's a business benefit to having horribly inaccurate news biased towards celebrity gossip so couldn't be stuffed. (See what I did there? :-)

I once read a "top ten comments of the week", there were several comments included that made no sense, not even when you found the original "news" article and looked at them in context.
