Read on their page that child died crash in Oropi. Fair enough. Then it goes on to say about crash at Papamoa Beach at 8pm. The Papamoa Beach one was late last year.
NOTE. Just looked to cut and paste but page has now been taken down. Was up for 2 hours.

How could they put untrue reporting like that. Where did they get the info.  Did they think that 1 fatality wasnt enough so added the one from last year.  I dont know but feel it is extremely insensitive to the family of the young man who was killed last year and very irresponsible.  I hope they publish an apology on their site soon

Have long since given up on Stuff as a news source. Nothing but silly one-sided opinion pieces and poorly researched news stories making mountains out of molehills. This doesn't surprise me at all. Place is devoid of any journalistic integrity.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Poorly corrected.. lol :)

... one of three fatal crashes yesterday. ...

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated there had been a third fatal crash in Papamoa.

Stuff is terrible - can be summed up as tabloid style sensation peppered with grammatical / spelling / factual mistakes. I note there is even a FB group - 'Stuff.co.nz spelling and grammar'.

But yet we keep going back. Can't... Stop... Fairfax.... Power... Too... Powerful.... cool

Stuff reporting the news badly? No way!

But seriously, as others indicate, Stuff should not be relied on at all.

Really? He starts searching FB furiously in order to become a member of the group. cool The number of stupid mistakes they make in print in one day on Stuff.co.nz leads me to believe that humans have no involvement whatsoever.

Yesterday they recycled a months old Lorde story and promoted it as a new(s) story.

I was about to start a post about journalistic standards but I'll add my 2c here.

What annoys me (and I don't know why it does) is acronyms becoming proper nouns, you see it all the time now especially in the NZ Herald. Examples: WINZ is Winz, NATO is Nato, NIWA is Niwa and so on. The NIWA example is from today's NZ Herald where their "science reporter" states that NIWA is short for 'National Institute of Water Atmosphere' (did he just take a stab that that's what it stands for?!)... but of course then goes on to refer to them as Niwa.

I don't know if it's laziness or stupidity or both.

For International news - Al Jazeera.

For National news... Tell me if you find one. I don't think there's a competent online news service for NZ national news.

Cheers - N

Aye, there's the rub. While keeping abreast of international news is important, I also like to know whats going on in my own backyard. Sadly this is becoming harder and harder to do, as most news agencies spin their stories with their own political bias, or engage in the current trend of "fearmongering as news".

I'm also finding that what I want from news appears to be drifting away from what mainstream Kiwis want, judging by the amount of "news" articles now that used to be the sole domain of gossip magazines, entertainment shows, & tabloid newspapers.

I appreciate that BBC, Al Jazeera etc are good for international news. As others have mentioned, is there really a better site for New Zealand news? Or do we all get stuffed with local news from Stuff.co.nz? I'd like a real alternative for NZ news but I suspect there isn't any site that stands out as the place to go for local news.

Is Stuff owned by Fairfax?  Just about everyone I know who has been involved with a Marlborough Express (another Fairfax paper) article, has been burnt to some degree, and most of them vowing never to fall for it again.

My personal experience was the day Windows 7 was released.  I was keen to upgrade my two systems ASAP, and PC Media — who I do a lot of my computer business with — asked if I would be interviewed by the Express for an article about the release of Windows 7.  They are a good crowd, so I said I'd do it.  The down side was that they asked if I could get there early because the Express wanted to get the story in that day.

So I was there at opening time, but had to wait two hours for the buggers to arrive.  I said my bit about why I looking forward to the new OS, but when I saw the article they had completely rearranged what I'd said, and made me out to be some sort of sad geek.  They used my being there early — for _their_ convenience — as if I'd camped outside the shop all night, and quoted me as saying I was "Really really excited to be getting Windows 7".  I hadn't said anything remotely like that.

So like my buddies, I now stay well clear.

Hah!  The article is still there.  I remembered it more or less right.
