Well it's the place where a Taniwha can hold up a 4 Billion dollar roading project, so I'm surprised that you are surprised that a few people minorly disadvantaged could potentially end up banning a 30 year tradition!

Letting off Fireworks this time of the year with high winds and tinder dry vegetation is not only inconsiderate, annoying it is very dangerous and monumentally stupid.

If you know the property, contact the councils noise officer, as they are probably breaching the noise limits.

It is more about there being quad bikes being sold that target children. But it all really comes down to the parents. Many dangerous things are legal, but that doesn't mean you have to do it. Many regulations just bring in compliance costs, and create compliance jobs and cost, and for many things NZ is well over regulated, to the point that many of them can't be policed properly due to the lack of resources.

Not easy to do at 2am or 3am. An issue I have with these inconsiderate numpty's is that my medical condition makes sleeping difficult. When I get woken by the fireworks it is very difficult for me to get back to sleep. This has a significant impact on my health.

Err no, it's not.. You can only legally purchase them on certain dates but it's completely legal to let them off anytime you like (Fireban and noise control issues aside)

I agree it's irresponsible to have fireworks out at this time of the year, and I fully support those caught letting fireworks outside the week of GF, being punished to the full extend of the law, but ban ? Nope that's just over-reaction.

The root cause is inconsiderate/incompetent neighbours, unfortunately every street seems to have them and their hard to avoid.

We had some idiot running around our neighbours property last night making chicken noises as loud as humanly possible untill 11pm.

Drugs are banned, smoking is progressively moving towards oblivion due to ban by stealth. I agree that the drinking laws need review.

I am not advocating a total ban, I advocate a move to controlled public displays run by those who know what they are doing. I also advocate doing the displays at events that have relevance to New Zealand like Matariki, Waitangi Day, New Years eve etc .

And fireworks laws have progressively become more and more strict and the type of fireworks more and more benign (though it seems louder and more bangy which is something I don't like).

More bangy for sure!! The ones let off on New years sounded like canons and I was two blocks away!

I'm all for making them illegal except on tradionally held holidays- and that's a concession. I'd really prefer pros only public displays ie. in parks.

One year long after GF Day some idiot was letting them off on a dry summer's night over my open sided hay shed. This year wasn't so bad- only a few random nights when we've been trying to sleep. It's hard on my husband though because he has a lot of trouble sleeping to start with and he has to go to work early.
