^^^

I'm not sure about other court houses, but the Palmerston North one has a hell of a lot of security. Metal detectors and glass panels so people can't assault court staff, etc. Sign 'o the times.

Some nutter stabbed his ex wife to death at the PN court back in 1998 and a major increase in security was carried out because of this and other incidents of violence around the country.

KiwiNZ: This is a serious situation. The staff are at considerable risk daily.

Oh come on. Now I suppose you want all Gov and Local Gov buildings  that have a public counters  to have  knuckle draggers at the doors and bullet proof glass with speaker grills at all counters??   If you carry this to it's logical conclusion any company  / organization that has a public interface will have to do the same. All restaurant works should have bullet proof vests just in case some loon decides to do a Sydney type of siege..   All police and HP officers should be armed  to ensure a safe work place.

Nope .  This is bureaucracy  gone wrong..

would you interview Mongrel Mob members, Satin Slave Members, recently released prisoners etc etc  with only a few centimeters of air between them and only other staff the majority of whom are female. Would also do this and tell them their benefit has been suspended or they are not entitled to a food grant?

DarthKermit: IIRC, the law was changed to allow govt departments to be prosecuted after the Cave Creek cluster-fu**, er, fiasco in the 1990s.

Oh like the telecom add... "Cluster fudge"!.... what marketing genius came up with that?

Yep I would, and have... ok not the food grant thing but telling someone they are about to be locked up is the same. The trick to it is treating people like they are human and using your innate skills analyzing human behavior to keep yourself safe. If you can't do either of those things then find another job.

it is not that simple, however I will not elaborate here in a public forum. If anyone is interested I could PM them.

Has there been a trial? (A: not until May 2015)
Seems to me that there's some history, definite social issues, health issues probably incl mental health issues.
Prosecution of the agency at this time seems daft to me - before the facts have been established.

ETA:

"The location of the trial was announced at a hearing this morning at the High Court in Christchurch and a date in May has been proposed for the hearing.

Justice Mander suppressed all other details of today's hearing including any description of Russell Tully's appearance."

A little unusual.

The Government that brought in open plan WINZ offices needs hung out to dry..its disgusting. Not only a security issue for staff but also grossly unfair on their "customers" who must bare all their most private issues to the entire WINZ office.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Do you often give bad news to angry gang members or people in desperate situations?

The sense of entitlement to benefits and grants means that not qualifying quickly becomes the government taking things away from you. Who do you take that frustration out on? The person in front of you giving you than news.

While I agree that inter-personal skills are vitally important, no amount of them will stop someone who is really angry, mentally unstable or on the war path from doing something they want to do.

So I guess you think A&E Doctors and Nurses need to find new jobs then as well.

There was a case ages ago in the UK where a farmer was prosecuted for unsafe work practices when his own arm was cut off in an accident with a bailer, so this does not really surprise me!

It will I expect be a fairly technical case dependant on what the employer knew prior to the event etc.

Since an employee can post images of cakes that insult and demean their employer and get $168k in compensation, nothing much surprises me now.

It is a fine line walked in Work and Income Offices, balancing the need for friendly easy access for those in genuine need of help (by far the vast majority) ,providing a safe environment for the staff and customers and providing protection from a small dangerous minority.

Oh, get off.  You mean since an employee can post images insulting their former employer to their private social networking accounts, and have that former employer screenshot and send that to every recruitment agency as well as their current employer with a demand that they be fired?  Absolutely they should be entitled to some compensation there.  And I suspect most of the penalty was actually the employment court sending a message to that former employer that it's not acceptable behaviour.  Or do you believe that we should never be allowed to say bad things about our corporate overlords?

I believe you should say such things offline because nothing you say on line is likely to remain private...! Also that chavs who bake cakes like that deserve nothing for behaving in such a manner.

I think you accept that privacy can never truly exist when you post online and how is it really that different from the usual NZ practice of phoning someones last boss and getting unofficial comment on a person before hiring them?

I suppose if it leads to a reduction of that and it's replacement with formal references rather than bosses passing on opinion and hearsay, personality clashes and so on as fact then that would be a good thing.
