To the OP I would have been phoning the police and reporting them.
And I definitely think the host needs to take much more responsibility, it wouldn't be easy to define who is the driver but it would be easier than trying to test foreign drivers.

Sitting in that lounge is no different to sitting in Koru Club, catching your flight and then getting in your car parked at the airport. should Koru club stop serving alcohol?!

If you can only get off the plane by driving, the analogy might hold.

There are taxi's, buses, shuttles to get you home from an airport so there is a non driving option.

Not sure , it's being proposed to ban drinking, just whether it's an issue that needs to be thought about. ? More host responsibility. Maybe signs reminding drivers etc

^ as above that's my stand as well.

I am all for banning alcohol completely but the thought of that rules, this rules are just plain stupid.

More rules, you'll need someone to police it. You can have billion of rules but it will be ineffective without someone to regularly check that. That means more time and money spent to police people. Is it worth it?

It doesn't make sense to me. I just don't see the point of this. Until you see droves of car start to hit the barrier when they drove off the ferry etc, then that probably make sense. For the last donkey years, I haven't heard anyone had accident straight off the ferry.

Stopping the serving of alcohol will never happen. We know that. It's about being a responsible host.

I've not been to Koru Club or been on the Inter Islander so I don't know what if any effort they make to stop people drinking and driving. But they need to make atleast some effort to stop people drinking to excess, like any bar or club has to. Saying they pretty much have no responsibly for people's drinking is stupid beyond belief.

Are you sure there wasn't a 3rd member of their party not drinking having a rest down below or on the observation deck.

A floating metal box containing hundreds of metal boxes with wheels containing hundreds of people containing alcohol.
What could possibly go wrong?  smile

It is a possibility. But being a responsible host could be just a couple of posters on the wall, and the barman asking "Are you the driver?"... If someone says "No, I'm not" then the responsibility falls all on the person if something bad happens.

No one has a crystal ball.

Maybe they just want to enjoy a drink to start their holiday. What else is there to do on the ferry.

Gozer:
Alcohol or drugs is a contribution factor in 30% of all fatal or injury crashes in New Zealand.

Which one should we really be targeting.

So 70% of accidents are caused by drivers who are not pissed or stoned.

These are the ones we should be targeting.

They should make getting wasted compulsory to bring down the road toll!

The 'alcohol isn't necessary' argument comes up a lot in discussions like this. Maybe we should just abolish anything that isn't 'necessary' so that we can all be good little robots just doing what we need to survive.
