tdgeek:
KiwiNZ: They are fine for those who wish to see them, those that don't wish to see them don't have to,

The way I see it, we or those around use liked them when they first came out.

Today, the young dont want to see an older movie they want the 2015 version, a new generation is the target market.

I guess at 37 I am no longer the target audience for most of these movies, but I can watch a movie from the 60's and enjoy it if it is a good movie; so there is no reason a youngster today wouldn't enjoy a movie from the 80's if it is a good movie.

Sure, some are rubbish, but that goes with all things, including original films.  I say bring it on, the more the better.  If it has a crap review, don't watch it.  Movies due in 2015 that I'm looking forward to:

Furious 7
Avengers 2
Mad Max 4
Jurassic World (4?)
Transporter (4?)
Terminator (5?)
Mission Impossible 5
Spectre (James Bond 23?)
STAR WARS 7!
Point Break (I didn't know about this one until I just checked!)

I usually reward Hollywood for their lack of creativity and originality by voting with my wallet and not seeing their remakes.

There's hardly an old TV series that they haven't turned into a movie  now.

Jaxson: 2 things:

1) Spiderman and Superman movies tend to happen every 3 years, hard to keep up.

2) So sick of trading on a name.  Take say Mission Impossible, which was a TEAM series on TV.  First minute in and the whole team dies, leaving Tom Cruise.
If you're going to not be faithful to the core of the original then go make some other movie altogether.

Speaking of Superman and spies...

Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) is Napoleon Solo in the Guy Ritchie remake of Man From Uncle.

This might be worth watching as Ritchie did a good job re-imagining Sherlock Holmes...

Paul1977: Good remakes:

12 Monkeys - original was a short french film that nobody had heard of.
The Fly - original was a B-grade 1950's sci-fi/horror.
Scarface - original was made 50 years before the remake.

I do believe there is a place for remakes under some circumstances. The original needs to be 40+ years old if it was a successful and highly regarded film. If the original is any newer than that, then only remake something that you can make a lot better.

It can be argued that if 12 Monkeys is a remake then there are literally hundreds of good and not so good movies which could be considered remakes based upon similar levels of inspiration and derived content:

  • 12 Monkeys as a remake is very different to The Fly and Scarface which are straightforward derivations.
  • Most of the main storyline is very different to La Jetée which itself is more like a slide show than a movie. There is only one scene that wasn't a montage of photographs. It is also one of the strangest shorts that I've ever watched.
  • There are several other movies that have adopted ideas and scenes from La Jetée without purchasing any rights or acknowledging the inspiration. The Wachowskis and Tarantino are recent examples of directors who have borrowed as much from other movies.
The following good movies are examples of possible remakes with varying degrees of inspiration and credit:
Terminator from La Jetée
Star Wars from Flash Gordon
A Fistful of Dollars from Yojimbo
etc

Having said all that, 12 Monkeys is undoubtedly a remake because the rights were purchased to create a full-length movie based on La Jetée.
