I don't know about Featherston but all the other GWRC stations that have CCTV in the Hutt are all IP based and monitored at Wellington Railway Station.

Yes they do have it and we advised the Police who will request the footage.

I'd happily volunteer to provide sniper cover for the car park.

heylinb4nz: NZ should have Saudi law, ie finger for a first office, hand for a second offence....except the buggers would then just claim disability. Perhaps the best thing would be forced sterilisation so these low life's cant breed.

I know. There are too many people alive in this world who are frankly surplus to requirements and serve no useful purpose. Given the population problem the world has, maintaining such people in a state of life is illogical.

Perhaps we should have been quicker off the mark with that religion we were going to start.

You left a car parked at Featherston Station for 3 days, Featherston is the wild west, hell we wont even leave our vehicles at Wellington Airport overnight, we get a Corporate Cab, no hassles no worries.

Haha, that's cute! You think they criminals, if caught would have to pay reparations!

Not in this country they wouldn't.

I had a car stolen from an inner Auckland parking garage, which was totaled by the thieves in a car chase with police on Tirakau drive after crashing into multiple other cars during the chase. I actually did get some reparations after asking for them  - didn't think I would, but for a couple of years after it I got the occasional 30-$50 payment - granted not much and pretty irregularly, but someone was obviously chasing them for it because it did keep coming until my excess was paid off. OK it does depend on the thieves being caught, but it's worth at least expressing your wish for it to the police just in case.

OT, but that horrified me more in this case was that I asked to be kept up to date with the prosecution of said thieves - after months the word reached me from "victim support" that they had been sentenced to something like 200 hours community service... yeah apparently that's what you get for endanging multiple peoples lives in a high speed chase with police and crashing into other cars, etc... But that's a discussion for another thread I imagine.

EDIT: lol, there was actually an article in the herald about it at the time, looks like it's still up:

It was also a Pajero (look up the meaning in Spanish)

The Police came back by email and said there was insufficient evidence to proceed. Looks like the cost is down to us and our insurer and we can't even execute the perps...

I had a window in my car smashed when parking in a  parking building in Wellington. The parking company nor the police really wanted to know, as they just say let the insurers handle it. But you need to report it to the police in order for the insurers to do anything. At the end of the day though you are out of pocket by the excess, which makes it a very expensive trip. Some sort of alarm which txts you and emails you a photo if it is being tampered with could be an idea though.

What would be good is if insurers excluding or reducing coverage, if you park in car parks which don't have a certain grade of of surveillance. That would put the pressure on these car parks to increase their security, but it will never happen. But I would imagine that a lot of their claims come from problems with car parks

This is the CRL (Crime Reporting Line) you're dealing with. Ask if they've actually requested the CCTV footage, then demand a copy of the [electronic] file to see what comments they've put into the system regarding this. My wife had her handbag stolen from her work and advised CRL there was CCTV of the two offenders. CRL closed the case using the "insufficient evidence" line which caused me to kick up a bit of a stink. The case was reopened and I arranged for the delivery of the CCTV but in the end the juvenile offenders couldn't be identified.

BTW - to all the naysayers here who claim police don't care - you couldn't be more wrong. What you're looking at is an exceptionally busy service that's extremely hamstrung by a lack of funding, but it's obviously what most of the country wanted.

To be honest (and based on TV documentaries) the police appear to spend far too much time dealing with drunk cretins and offering them free lifts home instead of leaving them to choke in their own vomit as a result of their stupidity and dealing with actual crime.

so you base what the thousands of police officers nation wide do, on what you see a few of them doing on police 10/7 and road cops?

you couldnt be more wrong
