So my wife returned from Auckland tonight, having been away since Monday.

I was in the kitchen cooking dinner when I get a call from her to tell me that her car which had been left at Featherston station car park had been broken into.

It appears some sub-human scroats decided to have a go at hotwiring it. they broke a rear window after trying and failing to bust the door locks, then tore the shroud off the steering wheel column in an attempt to get at the wiring. Unfortunately for them, it has an immobiliser so they just ended up leaving it in a mess.

It's insured so I rang the AA who insure than particular one of our vehicles and they organised a tow truck to take it for repair straight away. I drove to the station to collect SWMBO. En route, using my Bluetooth headset of course, I rang the police in Featherston who I thought may want to see the vehicle in situ since it was just down the road. Nah, let me put you through to the non essential call centre so you can make a report. After being on hold for over 20 minutes, I did that bit and suggested that the perps were probably not bright, so fingerprint checking may be worthwhile. They asked me if I had any idea who did it and I said -ask the local policemen as I bet they do.

So ignoring the hassle factor we now have to deal with this, we will end up paying $400 in insurance excess to fund the nefarious activities of these morons unless they are caught and sentenced to repay it at the rate of $5 a week or something, probably from the benefits we are paying taxes to cover anyway.

All in all, I think I have had better Thursday evenings!

Not surprised as it is Featherston, a very low social economic area. Although it could happen in many areas, I would be very reluctant to leave a car at a train station, there is little or no security, when there should be. The excess is a bit of a killer

There is CCTV but there should be more.

Even if they catch the wastes of carbon and oxygen responsible, I expect they will give them a slap with a wet bus ticket and send them on their way to carry on as before.

Are you getting them to check it? They may still be using a tape one that overwrites every day, as they tend to be a couple a decades behind over there from my experience.

Haha, that's cute! You think they criminals, if caught would have to pay reparations!

Not in this country they wouldn't.

Sorry to add to your bad news, but.... if the thieves should ever get caught and convicted and made to pay reparations, your insurance company will be getting their share of the money. So if the thieves pay $5 per week, you might get $2 a week.

I don't know about Featherston but all the other GWRC stations that have CCTV in the Hutt are all IP based and monitored at Wellington Railway Station.

I miss the days when poaching rabbits warranted a sentence of transportation or public hanging.

Try Auckland! Had my car broken into, very expensive Prada sunglasses stolen (sniff!). called the police, main police station on the other side of the road! Nope, too busy to come out. What a waste of time. We were constantly being burgled in my last workplace open carpark, sadly, it was a known crime site! They knew the police would not be interested in investigating. We were sitting ducks really ;-(

I feel for you, Its quite unsettling to experience these horrible aspects of un-civilization.
I also understand your frustration, and will that there was some better way to deal with it. Law enforcement here often seem like they don't give a ####.

NZ should have Saudi law, ie finger for a first office, hand for a second offence....except the buggers would then just claim disability. Perhaps the best thing would be forced sterilisation so these low life's cant breed.

There are too many degenerates getting away with causing inconvenience and unnecessary expense to the masses.

I'm sorry to say, with the current cost of a bus ticket, coupled slapping being shied upon, you'll be lucky if they even get splashed with the water normally reserved to soak the bus ticket in!

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.
