SirHumphreyAppleby:
snowfly: Also note that GST in Australia is only 10%, and in NZ its 15%.

They do not pay GST in Australia, only in New Zealand, and GST is zero-rated for export.

Ok, scrap that theory then!

Quacko: I already checked, Torpedo7 won't ship to NZ from their eBay page.

I can understand differences in prices for different retailers in different countries, but this is different. This is the same product, sold from the same warehouse in Hamilton, but at a different price for NZ vs Australia.

They don't have shipping costs listed, but did you actually ask?

I had a shipping issue with them recently with a bike.  Saw what I wanted in their retail shop, decided later to proceed with the purchase and went on-line to do so.  It is mandatory to collect the bike from the shop so it can be 'assembled by experts' to manufacturers specifications (yeah right!! - but I digress).  On-line they wanted to charge me an extra $30 shipping for what I knew was sitting on the showroom floor, and that I would have to go into the store to collect anyway.   A bit cheeky I thought.

I had them up about it and they said they differentiate warehouse stock from retail stock, and all on-line purchases get pulled from the warehouse regardless of what is in the store.  Fine for them, but from a customers perspective all I saw was an extra charge for nothing.

Things have gone downhill now they are just another big box retailer.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I did, and was told they don't ship to NZ via eBay.

I found R&R Sport were generally good to deal with. Haven't had good experiences with Torpedo7.

Unusual. Try asking for a discount instead ;-)

Aren't they now largely owned by the Warehouse, which is one of NZ's biggest big box retailers, so that would make sense.

Personally I have found them reasonable to deal with, as they also operate the 1-day website. Haven't purchased much recently though.

No, no, the theory is still valid.  The price in AUD is tax exclusive - maybe.  Torpedo7 holds an ABN for its operations (the fact that they even have a .com.au is evidence of that, you can't register an Australian entity without one).  The price in NZD is tax inclusive.

So it's $330 NZD including GST, or $270 AUD excluding GST.

That means that excluding GST it's $294 NZD in New Zealand, or $275.09 NZD in Australia.  A price differential likely caused by a lagging currency conversion (it's unlikely they will adjust this though - even if the AUD does not return to its previous strength, chances are that the RBNZ will take action to weaken the NZD against NZ's largest trading partners).

It would be if GST were still 12.5%. The GST exclusive price is $287.

That's... really bad.  I literally calculated it, then went and entered the wrong number anyway.  Where did 294 come from?!?

Still, that makes this whole thread even more pointless - it's a $7 difference, so I don't really see what there is to complain about.

Now, if you want to see something truly offensive, allow me to point to Xero's pricing:

https://www.xero.com/us/pricing/

Offended yet?
