joker97: there is only 1 road out of rangiora. only 1 road thru the cbd. one 1 road ..... many many cars.

live in the correct quadrant of the city. if possible, a microlocality that avoids those arterial roads to  go to work.

are you talking about the right place?
looks like there are 2 that go back towards chch

you said out of rangiora, SH71 and Urban Route 72 both leave rangiora in the direction of chch.

Then to chch there is SH1 and Main North Road

I lived in CHCH for 18 years, and visit every few years. No idea how traffic is though.

Last time I drove into Christchurch I was astounded at the traffic heading north up Russley Road during the afternoon peak. I was thinking I was very lucky to be going against the traffic.

They both join the motorway, the "south" road on the map is the main one, otherwise if you go via Woodend your just adding a bit of extra time on, because the traffic doesn't really start till around Kaiapoi.

Regarding the high level of congestion congestion, the TomTom index expresses peak travel times as a percentage of non-peak travel times. In general, commutes are probably shorter in Christchurch than Auckland, so even though it is 32% longer during peaks (average from tomtom report), it is 32% of (say) 20mins rather than (say) 15% of 60mins. But anyway, the latest TomTom figures show Auckland at 29% and Christchurch 26% above peak, so this post is a bit academic.

Honestly, don't go North of Christchurch. The traffic is bad and unreliable - can be between 30mins and 1.5hrs to the city depending on time of day, and the massive variation makes planning your day impossible unless you leave home at 5am. There are concrete plans for many of Christchurch's motorways, but I am not aware of any plans to improve the Waimak bridge bottleneck so the problem isn't going anywhere.

Commuting from the South has many more roads to choose from, and a 4-lane motorway to Rolleston will be finished in a few years

Widening the Waimak bridge to 6 lanes wouldn't be hard to do - the trestles it sits on were designed for 3 lanes each way so currently 1/3 of those trestles have no road sitting on top of them. But you're relying on them 6-laning the whole motorway north which I am pretty sure they have no intention of doing - they just plan to extend the existing 4 lane road further into town and bypassing Belfast and Redwood. Sure it will knock a bit of time off but there will still be a bottleneck at peak times to get on or off it - it will really just shift the problem from Belfast to Cranford St.

West Melton, or west-ward rural/urban areas worth checking out too.

Waimakariri district - Rangiora, Pegasus, Kaiapoi, Woodend etc areas are fine but travelling into Christchurch city during peak hours be your nightmare so plan your journey well.

Selwyn district - Rolleston, Leeston, West Melton etc areas are pretty good too.

Once the SH1 is properly linked up at the Russley-Johns roads for the North-South bound traffics, it will be better.
