ubergeeknz: they should renew it automatically and send a bill IMO, like most other kinds of tax.  It's daft the way it's done now IMO.

Could be worse. At least you can do it online. Want to reregister your dog? Physically mail in a piece of paper. No other way.

You can in Auckland, I just did.

Edit: to make sense.

Really? I know you can pay online, but you still have to mail in the paper. At least, that's what the one I just received says.

To be fair, last year I just paid and ignored the paper form, and after about 6 months they sent out the new tag anyway. But I don't think that's how you're supposed to do it.

Fred99:  You can't get a WOF online, so need to front up at a testing station/garage.

Well, until they invent a cloud-based mechanic, I suspect that getting a WOF will always involve a visit to a testing station.

I paid my bike rego the other day, almost forgot, but I had got a mail reminder. Went to the PO which always has 40,000 in the queue but lo and behold there is a Rego machine, sweet.

There was a day, when rego's were annual, same day for everyone, you had to line up.

scuwp: This is 'geek'zone right?  never heard of a calendar app?  Just drop the expiry in your chosen application and set the alert for a week or so in advance.  Geeez...if someone can't sort that out maybe they should stay indoors.

I programmed the date into my car under "emissions inspection due" or some such thing, got progressively more annoyed at me each morning until I reset it.

If only there was some visual indicator of when it expired - maybe you could stick it somewhere visible, like on the windscreen?

mdav056: "Hi, XXX, your YYY's licence (rego) will expire on 15 August.  RENEW ON TIME TO AVOID A FINE"
You know, I'd feel much more positive about the whole thing if it said "RENEW ON TIME TO GO INTO A MONTHLY DRAW FOR SOME NICE BIT OF TECH YOU'VE ALWAYS WANTED"
Or even "TO WIN BACK YOUR LICENCE FEE"
Spending money should be fun.

Don't murder your partner - go in the monthly draw to win a new dishwasher!

I personally believe the opposite. In my world it would be "Renew on time or your car will be crushed."

It's nuts that you can't renew your reg or buy RUC at the same time and same place.

Of course you can.  Sure not an independent garage, but go to any VNTZ, AA, VINZ testing station and you can do exactly that, and more.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

The UK equivalent is VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) or commonly 'the tax disc".

The system prints the usual reminder that comes in the post. At one minute past midnight on the day after it ought to have been paid, the same system prints and mails the fine notice if you have not paid...!

We used to do it at the same independent garage all the time when we had a diesel car.

LOL.  I think there would need to be a serious cost-benefit analysis done on that deal!

I guess the problem is more in having all three of those line up so you only need one visit (I know rego and WOF can)

Athlonite: why not be like the Power companies pay before the due date get a 20% discount now that would be nice indeed

Its a TAX not a service, having power supplied to your house is optional. Paying tax isn't.

I have no problem with the wording giving a warning that if you don't pay it on time you risk getting fined.

That's seriously messed up.  After you've murdered your partner, that's when you really need a new dishwasher.
