"Hi, XXX, your YYY's licence (rego) will expire on 15 August.  RENEW ON TIME TO AVOID A FINE"
You know, I'd feel much more positive about the whole thing if it said "RENEW ON TIME TO GO INTO A MONTHLY DRAW FOR SOME NICE BIT OF TECH YOU'VE ALWAYS WANTED"
Or even "TO WIN BACK YOUR LICENCE FEE"
Spending money should be fun.

they should renew it automatically and send a bill IMO, like most other kinds of tax.  It's daft the way it's done now IMO.

I'd really love to get an invoice for it in the mail. I know I should probably put it in the calendar on my phone or something to remind me to renew it, but I never seem to remember. I don't think there's ever been a time where I've renewed my registration without it being expired already tbh. Thank goodness I seem to be lucky and never drive through checkpoints whenever that's the case.

Good lord, do you want a gold star and a pat on the head for paying it too?

It's your rego, you have to pay it. Pay it.

What next? My phone bill told me they would charge late fees if unpaid - I'm outraged!

They do send out a reminder a month in advance.

I get a reminder in the mail a month before mine expires. No idea why I get that, maybe because I pay it online?

You get a reminder several times a day, the reminder is at the beach, the Mall, the Café even in the middle of nowhere.

This is 'geek'zone right?  never heard of a calendar app?  Just drop the expiry in your chosen application and set the alert for a week or so in advance.  Geeez...if someone can't sort that out maybe they should stay indoors.

Could be worse. At least you can do it online. Want to reregister your dog? Physically mail in a piece of paper. No other way.

I think what the OP is referring to is that the "RENEW ON TIME TO AVOID A FINE" threat is on the reminder notice that they send you a month or so before it actually expires. I also thought it was a bit of a laugh when I recently renewed my rego and saw this on the reminder. I would understand if I was late renewing but this is on the first reminder they send.

In other news, anybody used the new rego website? I have mixed opinions, I like some things (like not having to type in my drivers license number) but its a bit harsh on the eyes (link https://transact.nzta.govt.nz/transactions/RenewVehicleLicence/entry).

Edit: to make sense.

This.  I have direct debits set up for all my regular bills.  For the rest I add a task to the Task app on my phone, with the due date and a reminder one week earlier.

As for the wording...  I agree that it's a bit heavy-handed.  Maybe it should just say how much you owe and, in the fine print at the bottom of the page, mention that there is a fee for late payment and possible fine if caught driving with an expired rego.  But it's a tax - what other tax gives you a discount for early payment?

Could be better too.  You can't get a WOF online, so need to front up at a testing station/garage.  The WOF and reg systems are tied in to the same system.  It's nuts that you can't renew your reg or buy RUC at the same time and same place.
