Wade: Google Camera app has an animation suggesting you turn phone 90 degrees if you start filming in portrait mode :P

Well that's a good idea. Although it does suggest that iPhone users aren't necessarily more likely to be idiots, it just means Android phones tell their users "hey, stop being an idiot".

We just never had the guidance damn it!

Geektastic: The problem is in indulging people by showing their videos of stuff as if it was actually news, which 99% of the time it isn't really.

The alternative is showing youtube videos in 240p on the National News for major sporting events where there is HD coverage available and shown on other news programmes.

I really enjoy watching swimming where the pool is a collection of 6-8 pixelly blobs.

Well, it could be worse. There's a Reddit thread this morning showing a disgruntled ex-employee shooting dead a news reporter and her cameraman live on air. Both from the broadcast itself, and also the footage the shooter uploaded to twitter of himself doing it. :-/

But back on topic. When portrait is the default position to hold your phone, there will always be people who video stuff this way.

The question is -

Would you prefer it displayed on the news with:

A) The edges blurred out to fill the screen
B) Simple black pillar boxing

Out of those options, I prefer option B.

No not normally, but if the shot/clip will look better that way which maybe 1/1,000,000 then yes

To be fair, quite a lot of the videos on YouTube would look better that way, i.e. with a finger covering the lens.

A sporting event is not news.

You used to be able to get Mac screens that were designed like A4 pages and could be rotated on their stands.

Maybe you could adapt one..!

FWIW, I noticed the same kind of blurring at the top & bottom of some footage shot in landscape. :(

Someone has clearly told TVNZ that black space is inappropriate. I'm surprised they haven't used this space to show ads.
