JoshWright: As a waiter who works in a very busy restaurant/function centre I see where she's coming from. Everyone has their moments like forgetting how many people are at a table/if more are coming etc.. The highchair thing is a bit weird but honestly in a hospitality work environment you need to clarify everything/ask excessive questions.

Had a lady yesterday order an English Breakfast tea which I took to her table 5mins later only for her to ask why I served it with standard milk rather than Trim. Did she ask specifically for Trim? No, she assumed I would just somehow know she preferred trim.

Bottom line is both waiters and customers can be idiots and if a simple question can clear something up then don't be a dick about it. To be quite honest I'm offended you assumed she was under the influence, I'd like to see you try working hospitality! It's tough.

You're offended on her behalf? Really? Ok.

I've been to well over my share of restaurants, and I've never seen a display like this one before. You could POTENTIALLY excuse the checking numbers thing (Though why after she had already got 2 menus), but on the back of the high chair thing...

I think you need to lighten up, the thread wasn't a nasty one, though I see plenty of people have rushed to that conclusion, negative as usual.

joker97: If they can communicate with perfect linguistics they won't be waitressing.

Disagree. This wasn't a language problem, it appeared to be a lack of concentration thing. I know plenty of wait staff who are very well qualified or on their way to being so, they wait tables because it suits their hours.

Mark: I always get asked if I want a car wash when I buy petrol at my local station ... that's with me standing there, holding a helmet, wearing full bike gear and a motorbike on the forecourt :-)

Reminds me of the time I arrived home, wearing a wetsuit, and got asked "what have you been doing?" by the neighbour :)

Hammerer: Twenty or so years ago I saw a guy ask for a "high chair" because he wanted to sit at a window. This was back in the days when people could smoke inside and he wanted to smoke at a window. He got a "high chair" for a baby rather than the bar stool with a higher than usual back on it.

Not sure how big your friend was, but there is simply no way a regular sized adult could sit in a baby high chair (These days).

Regardless, with a baby present at the time of the request, one would not normally assume an adult wanted it.

Well there are many activities you wear a wet suit for :)

I can't really fathom what difference that would make ?

to be fair, wouldn't you rather they are accurate with it?

Sure 10% is simple, but think about it on principal.

I'm sorry but no. 10% is the easiest thing in the world to be accurate with. Pretty sure my 6 year old could work that out (he doesn't know how to use a calculator).

10% yes, it would be absurd to get it wrong, i agree.

But take it from a Dyslexic who can confuse numbers, Everyone has their reasons. Having seen mistakes been made, being safe rather than sorry is always a good thing.
