A trench at a construction site collapses, trapping a worker, resulting in police, ambulance and three fire service crews attending to free the man, who suffered a broken leg. I'd say that's probably worth a news story...

Geektastic:
MikeB4: I guess it's a pain that they report boring mundane things that happen daily in New Zealand life and not suicide bombings in Auckland or sieges in Wellington

The problem is that we do not really have local news on TV.

National news should major on world events and significant home events. It seems at best unlikely that there were no major events going on in the world worthy of reporting at the time someone decided a man in a ditch was a headline story...

The man in a ditch, cat up a tree stuff should be in the last 5 minutes before the sport.

Our news does not cover the wider world context well at all - it is far too inward looking.

They probably realize that by the time they go to air it has all been well covered on the www (except Stuff) and on BBC, CNN etc etc.  One News from 6pm to 7.30pm is just a magazine as is TV3

Agree but it didn't warrant having a live feed from the reporter where they introduced a recorded interview.

Also, they didn't actually say anything useful about why the trench collapsed.  It was meant to be 3m deep, why did it not have barriers installed to stop it collapsing?

Now it is making more sense. Several construction workers have been killed this way in recent years in similar circumstances. It deserves to be an issue 100%.

Could the reporting could have focused on that more if the OP did not get the seriousness of the issue? but I have not seen the item.

The issue does indeed turn out to be a serious one worthy of proper reporting. Unfortunately, that is not what I saw. What I saw was a wild-eyed reporter standing in front of an empty ditch doing a very bad job of trying to convey a sense of urgency and immediacy. While laughing at this, I missed the actual news, which was that someone was injured and that this is actually indicative of a real health and safety issue.

I wish someone hadn't been hurt because your commentaries are brilliant.

If only they'd used Ditch Witch to cover the ditch, then maybe we wouldn't have to know which channel to watch in order to get all the news on the ditch?

Whilst, the main point of the article was important - someone was seriously hurt in a dangerous incident, so much of the news programs are like this (warning: strong language):

"All of the toilets have been stolen from the new Christchurch Police Station.

A Police spokesman says they have nothing to go on".
