things like, how many km you can get out of them, how much you can get another equivalent set for, the price of petrol, its not just as simple as put them on and expect to save money. They will do that but over the life of the tyre and the extra they cost does it make monetary sense
Talking to a couple of tyre shops here (Chch), the way it seems to work is that deals are offered against commitments by the tyre shop to take a bulk deal at a discount. They have to take a punt that they'll be able to sell them, or they're going to either have to take what they couldn't sell into stock before expiry of the deal, or worse - they don't get offered future deals. Old saying - you have to buy well to sell well. The trap is that if you're committed to buying a particular brand/model, and if that's not on special at the time you want them, then you're going to pay close to full price, as even if you can haggle well - the margin isn't there for the tyre shop to offer a big discount. So talk to the tyre shop guys, if you say you want a Hankook XYZ - but there's no deal going at the time, chances are that they'll have a deal going on something else equivalent.
