If I bought a gift for someone, I would not be putting the gift receivers email address, I would be putting my own. No?

I think the point is that he wasn't asked for his email address or told that NL would look it up.

These companies build a 'profile' of their customer including contact details.  I think it's great they collate that information as it makes sorting issues easier and sometimes eliminates the need for paper receipts.    However out of the blue and without warning NL sent an electronic confirmation to the registered email address, which happened to be the primary home address, probably long since forgotten as part of the first transaction months or more likely years prior.

I just thought it would be nice to get some confirmation from the customer that sending an electronic confirmation was ok first.

I have never had one so assume it is just a new thing?
