Bunnings appear to have the opposite tactic; offer the same price all the time with no sale events. Mind you, I'm not convinced that their prices are as low as the should be, having made comparisons with overseas stores and looking at the buy prices on some of my wholesale accounts.

KMart's another store that seems to operate in a similar manner; while they'll sometimes have clearance sales, they don't have weekly sales with their junk mail typically just pushing products not specific discounts. Their pricing seems to be deliberately set somewhere in between The Warehouse's full and typical discounted pricing.

They are pretty consistently *slightly* cheaper than Mitre 10 Mega. Sometimes by 10c. Very handy if you want to leverage M10M's 15% price promise...

That Price Promise is mostly a crock anyway. Both stores will have the same items, but as a different brand or model name. (I'm talking power tools mainly here).
I do know that when JBHIFI started selling appliances, they had a vacuum (handheld I think) that they discounted in one of their weekend sales, and Bunnings had the exact same model - they had to beat it by another 10%. Angry phone calls to the supplier on Monday morning ensued, and I think now Bunnings has a different model number, but essentially the exact same product but they no longer have to price match it.

My experience with companies offering price matching, is that they try pretty hard are looking at ways to get out of honouring it, via the fineprint in the terms. Some will only honour it if they have the stock in the store, and many stores tend to limit their stock and have to order in anyway, so they are never going to honour it. However they use their discretion with this, so if they are likely to make a loss, they won't honour it, but if there is a profit in itstill, then they may get the product in for you and price match.
It is more about them appearing to be the cheapest, because if you advertise that your prices are so good, that if in the unlikely event you find someone offering a price for less, then you will better that price, it is going to be unlikely.

I got a sweet price match on an in sink erator at bunnings when harvey had a sale on them. Ended up about half the price.

While some stores (Briscoes, Kathmandu...) seem to be in permanent discount mode (which surely must mean their RRP is inflated to start with), I've noticed more stores having frequent sales in the last few years - I can't remember the last time I was at Queensgate mall and there were no sale signs up. Are retailers are still struggling in the wake of the last financial crisis? You used to wait until the Boxing Day sales to get a bargain. The advantage of receiving money or vouchers for Christmas was getting more/better products in the sales than you could have got yourself a week earlier. Now many retailers have big sales before Christmas, a time they were usually happy to keep the prices up as punters had presents to buy and money to spend.

This is the problem now, we are use to sales every couple of weeks so when the boxing day sales start they are never as good as we expect because most products have already been on sale.

Bike Barn did have a 50% off coupon on weet-bix boxes recently. My brother in law got 2 bikes for his daughters (BMX racing bikes) as they were so cheap. It's not on boxes in the supermarket anymore, but worth talking to friends if they brought some a month or so ago.
