My partner and I also did ours in September and got them back very quickly.  Big bouquets to NZ Passport dept - painless and fast laughing

kiwifidget: Why would you even bother paying the extra for an emergency one?!

because it's a guarantee and the person probably needs to fly quite soon. (in the case of my boss, it was done same day - he didn't have 6 months on passport needed to fly out of australia to another country, so couldn't board in wellington)

Or work is paying for it, so make sure with the extra $180.

Post Shops do good passport photos (for NZ or Canada or several other countries)...and they email you the files as well as give you printed images.

I think the price was $25.....last time I did it (18 months go?)

For the photo, you must ensure the whites of your eyes are visible. This means making some possibly ludicrous faces......but if the software at the receiving end can't clearly "see" your irises.....it will reject the photo. Took me three go's to get mine accepted....after two fails at Life Pharmacy in Albany, I went to the Post Shop at the Westfield in Albany. Gold.

Now the other half wants to do his online as well, even though his doesn't expire until May.
He doesn't have a RealMe account though, will he need one?

A RealMe account is/can be set up in conjunction with the on-line passport application - you don't have to set up the RealMe account first.

My uncle had to pay a ridiculous amount for one of these one time to fly from Aus to NZ (family emergency). DIA managed to courier the passport to SYD instead of BNE, who sent it back to WLG, who sent it to AKL. He ended up flying without any documentation (and oh boy were there heated words exchanged between ABF and INZ!)

Yeah well when I set up my RM account, I did have to go to a Post Shop as you say. But this week my wife renewed her passport online without having RM first and the new one is enroute to her now by courier. I may be wrong but I'm wondering if, when you renew a passport, a RM account gets set up without needing to go to a PO? I'm pretty sure she now has a RM account and didn't go to a PO.

This is incorrect - you can actually verify your identify for your realme account by submitting a passport application. You do not need an identify verified one to get a passport: https://www.realme.govt.nz/help/#renewing-your-passport-online-get-realme-verified-at-the-same-time

My bad

I did it a year ago and I seem to remember having to physically going into a post office before I could submit my application online.  I might well be wrong however.

Maybe they changed the PP/RM process since you did yours.

Submitted my application on Monday night.
Emailed yesterday (Weds) at 1100 to say it had been dispatched.
Received today (Thurs) just before midday.

All able to be done online.  No requirement to step into a Post Shop for verification.
