Geektastic: Yes it certainly isn't as simple as the times I have done it at places like John Lewis, who have always matched anyone's price regardless of if it was in the sale after they have made a call to check the price is bona fide. It's a bit like returns and warranties - never as easy as companies like Snap On who apologise and replace instantly on the spot.

Only problem now is that most stores have a policy of not giving out their 'best' price over the phone, some also refuse to issue any sort of written quote to avoid people running back and forth to get the lowest bidder.  If it's not on-line or advertised NL just aren't interested.

That's why you get a photo of the deal. If over the phone you give the store the name of the person you got the quote from. I saw someone today trying to get noel leemings to price match Harvery Norman, and had a photo on their phone to prove the price. Not sure if they were successful or not.

Some friends of ours today purchased a large UHDTV from 100% in Masterton and got them to price match HN in the Hutt. Apparently they just said they would cheerfully drive over the hill and shop at HN if the local guys did not want the business and it took the staff about 30 seconds to agree...!

NL matched a PB Tech price for a remote a couple of weeks ago.
Reduced their price by $100

I have had luck in noels with pricespy on the phone and they look down the list and say they wont match the first few and its normally PB that they will match on.

Annoying that they will double check the prices on their computer tho since the not logged in PB tech prices are usually pretty bad.

nakedmolerat: No problem getting price matched here in Auckland.

Warehouse stationery used to be my favorite until noel leeming starts advertising the price match.

Warehouse stationary is far better, as they will beat the price by 5%. The problem though is you have to jump through hoops to prove that the store has stock. But the store should do this legwork.

They are indeed good by lowering the price by 5%.

They dont however carry stock/product range as much as NL does.

I never have any problem price matched by warehouse stationery.

I love hearing how Warehouse Stationary and Noel Leeming price-match each other...
Especially as they're owned by the same company.

To get more sales?

Sales are fine.
Profits are key... competing against your own business to reduce margin isn't smart in my books.
Cutting their own lunch, then paying for the customers FlyBuys... it all combines to make an even less palatable equation.
No wonder Noel Leeming try to get out of price matching.

I love how no one embraces a simple, straightforward and honest approach on the assumption that they will immediately become the retailer of choice...!

American retailers and manufacturers build huge businesses by having straightforward "if it breaks, we'll fix it - forever" warranties, "If you can get it cheaper elsewhere, we'll beat it" pricing and so on. People choose those businesses because of that.

They don't usually fill them with caveats, conditions and tortuous requirements like here.

Must be a character thing or something I suppose.

More than price, I can guarantee that the person who says "We'll fix it, no hassle, no charge, for all the time you own it" will get my business every time over competitors that don't.

It seems that offering the legal minimum (and then often being difficult about it) rather than a generous voluntary alternative, or creating a headline price match policy full of hidden small print, seems more popular here.

I bring this up because, here was my experience:

Found a vacuum cleaner that was on the shelf. After looking on price spy i found that SmithCity sold the same vacuum for $200 less. I asked him to do a price match and he said "I would be making a $20 loss on this if i sold it to you" He tried to (weakly) justify that SmithCity is not a physical store in Auckland, which i told him that their T&C doesn't specify city.

After reluctantly agreeing to the sale he told me that they don't have any in stock (who has an item on display if none of the noel leemings stock it?)

So he "ordered" one from the supplier and said i will get a call in the next 5 working days. After 2 weeks (8-10 working days). I called them and they told me that the supplier doesn't stock them anymore either and for me to go back to the store to do a refund.
(again. why are they displaying an item if it's discontinued even at their supplier?)

That sounds like poor service all around. They shouldn't also expect you to make a special trip in for a refund  , or are they reimbursing you for that? WHat I would do is ask them to provide the newer or equivalent model that I am happy with if the old model is not longer sold. They accepted the order and it was paid for and they have had the use of the money for the last 2 weeks.

Unfortunately it is too late now.

I basically learned a few things from them now.

Always ask for stock first, ask if the current stock that have is brand new and not opened package (usually they try to sell one of their returned items first)

Then do the price match with the printed lower price from a physical store with the physical address on it.

It is pretty much why these retailers get such a poor reputation with the public, and public perception is so low for some of the retail stores operating in NZ.

I asked jbhifi to pricematch with pbtech and they said no because pbtech are parallel importers.

I got the impression that JB Hifi price matches only against noel leeming/HN/DSE.

Are PBtech parallel importers? For some things maybe?

I asked Noel Leeming to price match some Logitech speaks a few months ago.

They were not happy about it at all and started trying to make excuses. Luckily i had the T'c and C's up on my phone and could counter each rejection by referring to them.

Eventually, they reluctantly gave in and matched the price.

I understand they don't want to make a loss, but they are getting the benefits out of advertising "price match" so they need to suck it up when customers actually take them up on the offer OR don't offer to match prices! Simple.
