The reason you might be finding this is because normal post is not tracked.
now that "in trade" is a thing on trademe most of traders that sell will only ship by tracking (which means courier post etc).
They pass this cost on to the buyer.

A few things you can do.
1) pay the price
2) get a parcel pod if they have them in your city
3) get a p o box.

If you read the TM message boards you will send the other side of the coin, people that send via post then have to waste a lot of time following up when their buyers "say" they don't get the item etc and as they are "in trade" they the CGA and fair trading act apply.
You will also see a lot of rural buyers no longer putting the RD in the address meaning that the sellers are getting hit with fees at the end of the month from their courier companies for the RD delivery.

So in short I don't feel sorry for you, you picked to live out there not the seller of the goods, they are passing on their costs to you. If you don't want to pay then you need to arrange to pick it up from somewhere in town etc.

People keep pointing out that they don't feel sorry for me. I am not asking for sympathy. I just want to understand why this situation exists. From my perspective it seems unreasonable but there are always two sides to every story and it is good to get the other one.

Far from identical.

Courier post provide complete tracking of the item till hand over to the rural post contractor.

They collect it.

They have an account manager who will assist with any claims or location of missing items.

They have a claims service that is much easier to work with.

I often see post with tracking on auctions. I have the impression this is regular post. Is it different from rural courier? Are there two separate tracking services?

Yes, and its close to useless and the cost of the tracking addon to the already expensive parcel post service makes it a joke when compared to a real courier.

Last I asked the only way was to add it at the counter as well, so doesnt work for a business.

The reason courier items get delivered by normal post. Is because you are outside of the courier post coverage area. Courier post use the regular post service to carry out deliveries in the areas they don't cover (rural).

Only option other than what has already been said. Is to phone other courier companies in your area and see if you can find one that directly covers your address. And then convince trademe sellers to use that courier company.

Another reason sellers use couriers. They get insurance. So if the item doesn't arrive they make a claim against the courier. Those scanner units the couriers have record the location whenever something is scanned. So if a buyer tries to claim they never received an item when they actually did they will get caught. So well worth paying for if you are a seller.

Farmers make me pay world auction prices for dairy and export prices for meat, so all being fair they should pay the true cost of stuff flowing the other way. I'm looking at you Rural Broadband Levy!

Do some research here...

Farmers have next to nothing to do with the price you pay for produce.

That's about the dumbest statement I've heard for a long time. Name me one locally produced product that is sold cheaper to New Zealanders rather than being sold at a price that reflects a market price?

As rural consumers farmers pay more for just about everything they buy. I'd be willing to bet they pay more for broadband too.

We get round this by having a PO Box in the village. It's barely 3km to the village from the house, so I have no idea why we are RD but there you go.

Courier Post will deliver to PO Boxes at normal cost and days quicker than RD.

Wouldn't really work for me. Town is 20 km away and I only go in once a week or less. Not interested in making repeated special trips just for a small parcel.

HOWEVER, yesterday afternoon I ordered a San disk from Auckland and bit the bullet and paid the damned $10 courier cost. I couldn't believe my eyes when it turned up this morning. It came by Post Haste. I have been waiting a week on items coming by Courier Post that still haven't arrived. At least with Post Haste I feel I am getting something for my money. I wish more traders used it.

At the risk of stating what I see to be pretty obvious, but if you're not happy with how the seller chooses to send their goods, don't purchase from them and try elsewhere...

I don't sell a lot on Trademe, but when I do I use Pass the Parcel - Not because they're the best, or the fastest, or the cheapest but because it suits me - I'll always state in the auction that's how I am going to send stuff and the buyer is free to buy (or not) based on that...

I don't want to post stuff, I don't want to courier with other companies simply because I don't want to faff around doing so - I have the PTP bags and boxes on hand and it's low hassle...

My understanding of the extra charge is the courier companies allow for town to town deliveries but have to pay the Rural mail contractor to carry the parcel from town to your place as the contractor is not part of the courier network and carry goods for more than one company.

Another way to speed deliveries up is to arrange for the RD contractor to sign on your behalf and if it will fit leave goods in your letter box (If you live rural and have a small letter box then more fool you)

If your not happy to pay the extra make arrangements with your local garage or 4 square shop to have the goods delivered there this is what we do if no panic for goods and just pick up when next in town.

Not exactly, the items go from NZ post or whatever courier company to a company called Coural (a Co-Op owned by the rural drivers) and then picked up from their depot by the RD drivers and then delivered - there is where the extra cost comes into it.
