mattwnz:   Exactly, Although to can cost $6-10 to have the books shipped within NZ, so not bad in comparison . I wonder why NZers pay so much for shipping in NZ, and shipping from NZ to other countries, when the cost should be the same as in the other direction. Who is paying NZ posties to hand deliver a 50 cent item shipped for free from hong kong?

Taxpayers are. Under the Postal Treaties, postal services only charge a single token volumetric amount for all mail, and do not charge per item. Essentially that item is delivered at a massive loss, because the treaties were negotiated in a time where it was unthinkable that a government would subsidise the outbound mail for an entire country in order to increase their trade output at the expense of the other postal operators.

I will echo the prior comment about AU shipping costs. I send stuff from time to time back to NZ, and someone people in NZ send things to be - and the OZ to NZ rates are far worse than the reverse. I think it cost me over $30 to send a DSLR camera to by brother in NZ, which was well under 1kg and a small box. And that is the slow/economy service with no tracking, no insurance, all of which are ++$$. And things aren't really much cheaper here dollar for dollar, so add currency, excessive shipping and I doubt it will be worth it.

Edit: And the cheapest DHL quote for the same item was $120 from memory, more if I wanted to send the lithium battery with it - which AusPost wouldn't let me do in any circumstance.

Yikes! That's mad considering how close we are and how good the transport links to and from the big centers are.

Do it with a server and a crapload of HDDs and thats when a trip there, meet someone at the airport and then a trip back start to make a hell of a good business case. If you can find a sap of a staff member to do it for you.

So long as there isn't porn on the HDD I'd do it!

But is it worth paying someone $40 to do it then the airfares etc? 2 hours at the airport, 4 hour flight, 1 hour clear customs then the reverse, pay GST on arrival.

Airfares and paying someone is pretty close!

However hypothetical if you offered me free flights to Melb for a weekend in order to pick something up, that would be closer to $600
