bit dangerous ,, Petrol works especially if they are underground . A couple of litres down the opening and seal. all dead and hive useless in 2-3 days . Gets the adrenaline going i tell you .

I tried this with a big nest in a DOC camping area at Xmas. Doc had some powder which was not carbaryl - which does work - but some ersatz stuff which they changed to use because carbaryl is toxic and too persistent in the environment, apparently. Their stuff was useless, made the wasps drowsy for a few hours then they came back to life. Petrol didn't work either - I gave it two good dumps, but a couple of days later and it was business as usual.

Carbaryl does work - very effectively. Dump it in the entrance at dusk.

I hope this new system (Vespex) works. I hate wasps.

Manual fly swats. Much fun, good exercise, and the bodies get eaten by the dog, saving on dog food.

But -- I've noticed that fly swats, whether from the $2 shop or from the hardware shop, don't last as long as they used to. I think flies may be developing Kevlar exoskeletons...

I too have noticed that the fly spray does not kill.

It does however render the flies temporarily unconscious giving you a small window of time to suck them up the vacuum cleaner.

Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!

It's down to the chemicals allowed here I think. I have some SE Asian spray insecticide called Jumbo Vape that kills anything from cockroaches to houseflies in mere seconds. Literally never seen insects die faster short of being hit by a car windscreen. Smells lovely and orangey too. Cannot get it here though AFAIK.

The ingredients are

Transfluthrin

Imiprothrin

Permethrin

It's made by the excellently named Fumakilla Ltd in Tokyo.

Did anybody else catch the section on house flies on fair go last week. Basically they had something like 19 flies and they got sprayed with fly spray and all hit the deck. They were put into a container and after some time they all but one were back up and flying around.

This stems from another guy who has been testing all brands of spray at home with pretty much the same results. The spray companies all pretty much fobbed him off.

Is this a case of flies becoming resistant to common fly sprays so we now have super flies. I cannot stand these things with a passion and I dread the thought of not being able to kill these things.

I don't like sprays because they accumulate on surfaces and I have no idea what the long term effects when mixing various sprays across years in a house.

I don't like fly swatters because they leave a mess on whatever surface you catch the bugs on. It doesn't always wipe off (textiles / fabrics expecially).

I've come to love the electric fly swatter. It takes a little practice (sweep downward toward the head of the fly at the right speed and you'll get them most of the time).

Here's a wee video I just made after seeing this topic. It's two seconds long. Play it as often as you need to. Turn up the sound for the snap / crackle / pop of a former fly.

(Can't we embed video anymore? Hmmm.)

Googled some of these. They have a half-life of 14 days (Transfluthrin) and 30 days (Imiprothrin). That's per application, of course.

They are extremely toxic to fish and bees.

Improthrin moves into and through the soil easily. It kills pretty much anything invertebrate.....including things that you don't want to kill in soil.

They aren't particularly harmful in the short term, though long term use indicates possible affects in the liver and bone marrow.

For me....I don't need the stuff in the house unless I have a serious problem.....which I have managed to avoid, so far.

Like the OP, I loathe them with a passion, and this year have become an expert at killing them with my bare hands (easier to clean my hands than clean up the mess on the ceiling from when my weapon of choice was a newspaper!).

I've also completely noticed the same issue with fly spray not being effective any more - and given flies this year have been something chronic at our house (perhaps the warmer weather? Neighbours' dogs?) we had to so something more heavy duty than spray, so sought advice here on GZ.

To provide a longer lasting and (literally) less hands-on solution I ended up purchasing the Kiwi Care concentrate product (No More Bugs?), partly on the advice of the guy at Bunnings who said that Ripcord had an odour. He also recommended not spraying it inside, but applying it in appropriate places using a cloth; the only surfaces I put it on were above head height to keep the kids away from contacting it - primarily it was along the scotia and around light/air con fittings. I used a sprayer to do parts of the outside of the house.

About three weeks later and we're still way down on the numbers of flies in the kitchen, which has been the worst spot - from often having 20-30 flies, on a bad day now it'll be five. Similarly, in the spot outside where the flies would gather to sunbathe we have none.

Yep, the product may end up killing me (and my family), but at least I'll die a (relatively) happy and less-irritated man.

on the topic of flys -- how do you clean the spots from the ceiling?

I've heard you can steam clean them , but, is there an easier way?

Word of advice, don't buy the Budget brand of Fly Spray, it's useless. But then by the sounds of things, most Fly Sprays these days are.

At a guess I would think it is more a case of them having removed the chemicals which were known problems to human. Personally I never use them, as hardly ever have any in the house. The ultra violet plug in things which emit a purple light, are supposed to be effective, you see them in restaurant kitchens. Quite cheap too from bunnings.

I've tried a small uv/high volt grid lantern and only ever got various types of moth. None of the house flies were interested. The thing was sold as a mosquito killer but they don't repond to uv either. Researching the house flies apparently they are slow to respond to the fly spray, taking some time to die unlike blow flies that immediately go into hyper mode when the spray gets them.
