Banks don't send them in a working state (All the ones I've had in the past make you ring the bank up or use it once in a Hole in a the Wall machine first) so I don't think they are classed as Bank/Debit cards until they are actually turned on.

Every card I have been posted  from a Bank has  "worked straight out of the box" the existing PIN number is carried across and the Card is ready to run, no need to call anyone...

Who is your bank?

I recall when they sent me an eftpos card, that also worked out of the envelope. But for other banks they usually require you redo the pin over teh phone or in a branch.. One bank sent the new pin in a separate envelope a few days later, although can't remember if that was for eftpos or a credit card.

ANZ,

Same here with BNZ but their bank cards dont expire often so not sure if policy has changed in the last year or so.

And Offically "Bank and Credit Cards" are also prohibited Items,

https://www.nzpost.co.nz/personal/sending-within-nz/prohibited-restricted-items

Not sure how banks manage having to get everyone to go to a branch for a replacement card, oh thats right they just ignore the silly rule... ( Or maybe the rules only apply to us mere individuals)

Now that the manual credit card swiper is a thing of the past, surely a chipped card without a PIN number included is effectively useless......

ANZ,

I'm an ANZ customer and their credit cards haven't worked without activation for probably 4-5 years. They even have a big sticker on the card that says they require activating.

I discovered this a few months back.  Irrespective of whether and how many people flout the "rule", if NZ Post are willfully ignoring their own rules then the rule should be changed.  If the reason for the rule is that they can't insure something that is equivalent to cash (and is untraceable), then that is fine, but the rule should state that such items are shipped/posted uninsured and at the customer's risk.  A simple disclaimer is much better than a rule that everyone ignores.

Jewellery isn't accepted either, a few months ago a lady who was in front of me at tried to send some cheap $5 rings to someone she knew and she was denied and told she needed to courier them. Being the total value was only $10-15 she declined and left.

What would make more sense is if their policy said you can send particular items at your own risk as they are excluded from being covered by insurance.

You may find that you can't courier them either.

I have a nice Swiss watch for which the service agent isn't in my town.

Post office refused to accept my watch in any circumstances even if I accepted it wasn't insured, but helpfully suggested I take it to a competitor Brown the street....

But of course when the watch was couriered back to me, it was the post office courier who delivered it to me....

When they are struggling financially it seems ridiculous to decline the business.

Ok. Charge an eye watering insurance premium but for me refusing such products suggests to me that they don't trust their systems and employees....

I sent someone in Australia a normal parcel that contained a necklace in it. Of course it was opened by customs in Australia, but it got to who I sent it. This was back in 2009.

Paywave........

Thanks. I almost never use it because it costs the merchants more than EFT-POS...and I end up paying for that. I completely forgot about it. D'oh.

Jewelers and watchmakers association membership gets extra insurance and other things to allow them to use some couriers.

All cards I have got have not allowed a paywave until I had done an insert and pin transaction on them. One also didnt work at all for a transaction at a place with a stuffed machine that was not reading chips - the swipe and pin came back failed with contact issuer. I had set a pin online already on it.

For what it's worth, I have the given the bank instructions that my new credit cards etc are all collect from branch" and have been for years. Slightly inconvenient for me, but no issue with them going astray in the post etc.

Every so often they kindly offer that they can now just post them to me, and I say no thanks.
