Fairly credible rumours now (TMZ etc) - that he died from a drug overdose - or at least was treated for an overdose 6 days ago and not "battling the flu".
Damn it.

Who is this prince you talk of?

On another note, The rock star TAFKAP   (The Artist Previously Known As Prince) or ! or whatever, died today.

You are about 5 years behind the latest updates.

17 years - I'm still partying like it's 1999, driving along in my little red corvette and singing so badly that I make Doves Cry.

You're making ME cry with your terrible puns. :)

I was in a night club on 31 December 1998. You can probably imagine what the first song of the new year that they played was. laughing

Probably overdosed. As he did a few days earlier. Wait for the autopsy.

Not coke i don't think, apparently he had save shots a few days prior, which points to either morphine heroin or oxycodone.

One of the problems with Naxalone. It's a save, but without addiction treatment or at least additional care, some number of addicts will tend to want to get high again real soon and use more to overcome the opoid receptor block, leading to overdose and death.

It has also been provided to usa police officers in some areas as an emergency tool to save a life, but unfortunately in usa there has been significant misuse where an officer injects it into a sleeping or nodding addict just to move them off a park bench etc with similar results.

Isn't there a thread going on somewhere, people make their choices. The government cannot tell an addict to stop. It was his choice, and we have to let him to what he wants.

Yes there is a thread.

And dammit  - the "war on drugs" didn't save Prince from himself.

Damned US drug culture.  There's a pill for everything, apparently.  If it doesn't fix what's wrong, take another.

But out of character (at least for "common knowledge" - that he was vegan, religious etc.)

It appears that it probably was oxycodone, taken orally, and that was probably prescribed for pain after hip surgery.  Actually the claim is made that it was oxycodone/paracetamol, so if overdosing there's also the risk of liver damage from the paracetamol.

Remarkable stats for that drug (IMO) -  quick and dirty calculation says 1.5 billion 30mg oxycodone tablets prescribed per year in the USA - that's just the legal stuff.  USA uses 80% of oxycodone sold legally in the world.

Then there's hydrocodone, fentanyl, codeine, before you get to (illicit) morphine, heroin etc.  There must be a hell of a lot of pain in America.

The key words are 80% of the legal consumption of the world.
The blame should be on their medical system.

I thought he ODed by choice, it now appears(per fred99) he could have obtained his stash from a real doctor.

Any unexplained celebrity death attracts claims of drug overdose. It is actually quite easy to die during or after surgery even without drugs being implicated. So I wouldn't bother listening to such rumours until there are more credible reports.
